Will the pone booths phase out from the streets of London in near future? This may be the exact question asked by many as hundreds of those units will disappear in 2017, but only to get replaced with sidewalk kiosks offering Wi-Fi, free phone calls, screens with maps and directions of course.

Currently the feature is underway in New York City and Google will be carrying out the same in London by UK telecom giant BT and Sidewalk Labs, a subsidiary of Alphabet, parent holding company of Google.

Dubbed as LinkUK, the Internet Kiosks have arrived and is said with it the phone booths will become obsolete in the age of mobile devices. Instead new services would be offered in the places.

Releasing a press statement the LinkUK said, “Hundreds of users within range of a Link will be able to access free ultrafast Wi-Fi on the move, with speeds of up to 1Gbps—the fastest free public Wi-Fi service available.”

Link UK describes the experiment as sleek, ultramodern Internet kiosks that first popped up in New York earlier this year in February and attracted 671,000 Wi-Fi users, 34 million Wi-Fi sessions, and tens of thousands of free phone calls every week.

The press release added their service in New York has proven highly popular among tourists and messengers. The company is also adding up to 25 new terminals every week.
