Sleep is how your body reboots. When you shut down your computer, it dumps its temporary files puts everything in long-term storage so it can start fresh the next time you power it on. Similarly, while you are sleeping your brain prunes unused synapses so you can make new connections—so you can learn more.

Your brain does get full, in other words, and sleep is how you empty it.

Your brain cleans itself out when you sleep—your brain cells shrinking by up to 60% to create space for your glial gardeners to come in take away the waste and prune the synapses.

How does your brain decide which synapses to prune? It prunes the ones you don’t use. So if you spend your day being angry at opposing counsel, your brain will leave those synapses intact so you can get better at being angry. So focus on what matters, and you will get better at it.

Your brain even goes into pruning mode during a short catnap of 10–20 minutes, which is why a short, daily afternoon nap is so helpful.

So this weekend, your only assignment is to get some sleep.
