Elon Musk wants to fix traffic forever by starting ‘The Boring Company’

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It has become almost an annual tradition for Elon Musk to announce that he would like to solve the world’s traffic problems by digging tunnels beneath the Earth, and 2016 is no different.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO tweeted: “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…”

Musk welcomed in 2016 in January by telling bemused students at SpaceX’s Hyperloop Design Competition at Texas A&M University:

“Tunnels are great. It’s just a hole in the ground… if you have tunnels in cities, it would massively alleviate congestion. You could have tunnels at all different levels, you could have 30 layers of tunnels and completely relieve the congestion problem in high-density cities. So, I highly suggest tunnels.”

He has now reintroduced the idea at the end of 2016, a year which has, of course, been insane.

The Inverse website suggests that the idea is: “…just the sort of infrastructure plan that incoming U.S. president Donald Trump could get behind!”

Inverse points out Musk was at the table during a meeting of technology leaders with Trump this past week (although it’s unlikely Musk’s tunnels idea was highest on the agenda, or in fact on it at all) and also has a position on Trump’s strategic policy forum.

And, of course, Trump loves to think up outlandish and controversial construction ideas. A wall above ground and tunnels below it could form part of the new topsy-turvy world we now live in. But who knows– maybe the tunnels are just metaphorical.

The only thing boring about the future may be Musk’s new company name.

“It shall be called ‘The Boring Company.’ Boring, it’s what we do,” he tweeted after once again proposing the project.

The only real problem is the US is seismically active, we can all remember the Loma Prieta 1989 earthquake destroying a certain double decker highway in San Fransisco, one of the lesser known evils of digging holes is gas lines and water are routed through tunnels to share the costs and unless you are digging into solid rock those underground structures are going to move.

The cheapest and quickest option is the Dutch system of digging a trench and laying a concrete tube into the hole, the concrete is subject to the liquefaction of the surrounding earth the most expensive is the Boring Machine costing a £billion per mile cutting through rock. I can already surmise which is the method of choice. The only Boring done will be writing the company name.
