Following threat of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj the ecommerce giant Amazon has written back express regret at hurting Indian sensibilities.
The offending item has also been pulled out from its Canadian website that sold doormats featuring Indian flag.
Swaraj’s threat to Amazon included denying visas to its employees. The product came to notice after Atul Bhobe tweeted a complaint that such products are listed on the Amazon Canada website.
The minister tweeted immediately to the Indian High Commission in Canada calling the sale of such products is not unacceptable by Indian government.
She asked the Indian High Commission there to take the matter at the highest level with Amazon.
This is not the first time the online retail giant has found landing in trouble water. In 2016 Amazon was spotted selling doormats bearing images of Indian gods and goddesses.
In 2014 the website was found selling leggings bearing pictures of Hindu gods.
One of the tweets Swaraj said yesterday, “Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately.”
Amazon also sells merchandise featuring flags of other countries including Britain, United States and Canada.
Currently Amazon is planning to invest $5 billion in India citing the rapid gorwth of e-commerce market.
