A company announced last week that it has developed new micro-device implants with parts that can be remotely moved in the human body. Stated potential applications of the implants include drug-delivery for tailored drug doses for precision medicine, catheters, stents, cardiac pacemakers, and soft microbotics. The device risks, such as possibly using it as a weapon and/or mind-controlling targeted individuals were not reported by Kurzweil News, that published the story.

“Our iMEMS platform enables development of biocompatible implantable microdevices with a wide range of intricate moving components that can be wirelessly controlled on demand, and solves issues of device powering and biocompatibility,” says Biomedical Engineering Professor Sam Sia, senior author of an open-access paper published online January 4, 2017, in Science Robotics).

The researchers were able to trigger the iMEMS device to release payloads over days to weeks after implantation, with precise actuation by using magnetic forces to induce gear movements that, in turn, bend structural beams made of hydrogels with highly tunable properties. (Magnetic iron particles are commonly used and are FDA-approved for human use as contrast agents.)

The National Science Foundation, NIH, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (Singapore) funded the study.

There was no mention in the report of the risk of injection against the will and/or consent of the patient (or target) nor possible implications related to mind control via drug release.
