Oh My God! An express way in Japan runs through a building too. It may be weird to learn but the Gate Tower Building in Osaka city is the truth.
Built in 1992 and nicknamed as The Beehive, the Gate Tower Building consists of 16 floors the Hanshin Expressway passes through it covering the floors fifth to seventh without contacting the building and equipped with special structures that can protect noise and vibration.
The three floors consist of elevators, stairways and machinery. The elevator does not stop on 5th, 6th and 7th floors.
The Gate Tower Building also houses a helipad on its roof.
The Hanshin Expressway is operated by Hanshin Expressway Company Limited and it surrounds Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto for about 239.3 kilometers.
The Gate Tower Building is 71.9 meters tall and is constructed with reinforced concrete as well as steel frame. It covers site area of 2,353 square meters and total floor area of 7,956 square meters.
The construction of such strange building was due to fight between landowners and government during redevelopment project of the area. After five years of negotiations it was decided the building as well as express way should co-exist in the same space.
