Harry Coumnas Has Designed a Greenhouse to Produce Oxygen for Astronauts

Scientist Harry Coumnas has designed an inflatable greenhouse that astronauts can use to grow fresh food and produce oxygen. The blueprint involves an inflatable and deployable greenhouse to support plant production for air revitalization, nutrition, and water recycling. 

Harry Coumnas says “We are trying to imitate what plants do on Earth and make use of this process for life support. The entire system of lunar greenhouse is a small biological system that is present on the Earth. These lunar greenhouses are being tested to ensure that the system adequately supports a crew of astronauts when they are on a mission.” The astronauts exhale carbon dioxide which can be used by plants and they can generate oxygen through photosynthesis.

He has grown many plants and vegetables aboard the International Space Station. His innovative approach uses plants to scrub carbon dioxide, and provide food and oxygen.
