Louisiana Coast Is Sinking, New Map Estimates Subsidence Rates
The map, published in GSA Today, has long been considered the “holy grail” by researchers and policy makers as they look for solutions to the coastal wetland loss crisis, the researchers said.
“The novel aspect of this study is that it provides a map that shows subsidence rates as observed at the land surface,” said Torbjörn Törnqvist, professor of geology and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Tulane University.
“This sets it apart from previous attempts to map subsidence rates.”
Jaap Nienhuis, a postdoctoral fellow in earth and environmental sciences, is the lead author of the study. He said that while the present-day subsidence rate averages about nine millimeters, or just over a third of an inch each year, there is plenty of variability among specific sites along the coast.
“This information will be valuable for policy decisions about coastal restoration, such as planning of large sediment diversions that are intended to make portions of Louisiana’s coast more sustainable,” Nienhuis said.
The researchers used data obtained by a network of hundreds of instruments known as surface-elevation tables, scattered along the Louisiana coast. These instruments enabled the Tulane team to calculate subsidence rates in the shallow subsurface (up to about 10 meters or 30 feet depth) where most of the subsidence happens. This large network of surface-elevation tables was installed during the post-Katrina period, so determining subsidence rates with this method has only recently become possible.
The research was made possible through publicly available data collected through the Coastal Wetland Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act Program and the State of Louisiana. Funding was provided by the Geomorphology program of the National Science Foundation.

This is logical if you understand the real cause, which is the melting and losing weight of the glacier of Greenland that belongs to the same continental base structure as the whole North America. The earth is flexible but its crust is comprised of many continental plates that move and rub each other.
In this case, the continent of the North America is like a giant seesaw that has been balanced before but is not anymore. When the glacier of Greenland is losing weight, this has its effect in Canada and the USA. The Northern part of Canada rises along with Greenland, the areas on both sides of the border between Canada and the USA may stay at their present level but the middle and southern parts of the USA sink. The coast of the Gulf of Mexico sinks most. Other geological forces are working also, and the Louisiana coast is the most vulnerable region because it is lowland.
Not only America but the whole world is in a great danger that the people don’t seem to understand although I have tried to explain it again and again. There is coming a global tsunami-disaster along with never experienced severe earthquakes. The disaster will be caused by a phenomenon that can be called the ice-shedding of Greenland. Like the ice-shedding takes place every spring in the frozen Arctic and Subarctic rivers, the same phenomenon is able to become real in the continental glaciers also, starting in Greenland.
The approaching ice-shedding of the glacier of Greenland is only a part of the geophysics and general physics. I have studied it, made many calculations and conclusions on it and written a book named Ice-Shedding of Ages that you can find in several locations in the Net like at the Amazon. There is a spring of ages advancing now and the glaciers are melting, the continental glaciers included. Do you think that the continental glaciers are just melting on their places and raising the sea level? That is a big mistake, a fatal one. The potential energy of the glacier of Greenland is almost one million times the energy that the tsunami in the Indian Ocean discharged into the ocean, calculated by some scientists. I have calculated it also and much more.
The potential energy of the Antarctic glacier is 13 times greater than the same of the glacier of Greenland. When the glacier of Greenland discharges first, the tremors caused by it run over the entire earth and concentrate at the Antarctic coastlands. At least the rim glaciers of the Antarctic will discharge also, repeating the global disaster that the burst of Greenland has caused. No place upon the earth will be left unaffected.
A majority of the people will die and only God can save those whom He wants to. Just pray and ask His help. Don’t say that God promised not to destroy all the flesh upon the earth no more. If He drowns a certain majority of them, He has not killed all and has fulfilled His promise. In Addition, it was a covenant that the mankind has broken already. Even the sign of covenant is used in the way that diametrically mocks the creation work of God the Creator.
