RED Announces the World’s First Smartphone Featuring a Holographic Multi-View Display

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

From smart homes with voice interfaces to AI-powered cars that can navigate morning rush hour traffic hands-free, many promises of the so-called ‘future’ have been slowly making their way into our day-to-day lives. And while we’re still waiting on a reliable Breakfast Machinee, there’s plenty more cool doodads to hold us over until then.

Doodads like the RED Hydrogen One premium smartphone. Hope all you Star Trek fans are sitting down for this one.

Conceived of by the high-end camera maker, the Hydrogen One will include the world’s first multi-view holographic display that a user can watch sans glasses—all streamable through RED’s own new RED Channel based featuring 4-view holographic content. Additionally, the company claims that their own H30 algorithm will convert boring old stereo sound into “multi-dimensional” audio.

Powered by Android OS, the unlocked aluminum or titanium device (estimated to be $1195 and $1595, respectfully) sports a pronounced gripped exterior body surrounding a 5.7-inch display with a small camera bump, a USB Type-C input, a microSD slot, and a headphone jack. The phone will also allow for modular attachments for capturing specific imagery types—not unlike the company’s own camera bodies.

Says RED:

“With one fell swoop… the future of personal communication, information gathering, holographic multi-view, 2D, 3D, AR/VR/MR, and image capture just changed forever.”

That’s a pretty bold stance from RED’s marketing department. Your move, Apple.

The phone is expected to drop in early 2018. Find out more over at RED.
