NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity acquired the above microscopic photo on May 7, 2017 (Sol 1689) at “mega-ripple” near Bagnold Dune, Gale Crater.
The overwhelming majority of sand grains in this photo are Martian ooids. Red arrows point to ooids that were cemented together over 3 billion years ago to form an oolite on a sand bar (see context image below) in the lake at Gale Crater.
Mars wind is unlikely to have transported the oolite to this place in recent time, in view of the weight of the oolite.

Red arrow points to a wheel of Mars rover Curiosity near the crest of a former sand bar (called mega-ripple) near Bagnold Dune, Gale Crater, Mars. Over 3 billion years ago, ooids in the sand bar got cemented into an oolite (see the first figure above).
