Individual organisms do not live long on Earth. After death, their bodies may be eaten or disintegrate or break apart. Regarding breaking apart, organisms may break apart into organs, or tissues, or cells. However, the break-apart process often stops on the level of cells. The challenges facing the identification of ancient cells are as follows:
1. Time: Ancient cells may be over 3.5 billion years old. Humans may never know what happened during this time span.
2. Places: Ancient cells were often transported from elsewhere. Humans may never know where they came from.
3. People: People have conflicting interests.
4. Affairs: Civilization is thought to be less than 1 million years old. In fact, civilization is over 350 million years old on Earth and over 3.5 billion years old on Mars. One can see the challenges facing the identification of such ancient cells.
5. Material: Few people know the anatomy of all the cells of ancient animals, plants, and microbes.
