FBI Warns Internet Users to Reboot Your Router - VPNFilter Malware (Videos)

On 25 May 2018, the FBI issued a statement that foreign cyber actors had used a malware program known as VPNFilter to infect “hundreds of thousands” of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide. Infections of VPNFilter have been detected in over 50 countries

Officials have reportedly linked the spread of the VPNFilter malware to the ‘Sofacy Group’, also known by the names ‘sandworm’, ‘fancy bear’, ‘pawn storm’, ‘sednit’, ‘x-agent’ and ‘apt28′, which has in turn been connected to the Russian government.

Individuals who use small office or home office routers are being advised to reboot their devices, and to also update the firmware of the devices along with disabling the ability for the device to be susceptible to remote access by disabling remote-management settings and changing passwords.

The malware program VPNFilter reportedly has at least one component that cannot be expunged through the action of a simple reboot, which makes re-infection of the user’s device easier. Indication are the hacking campaign has targeted devices from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear Inc, TP-Link and QNAP. As of 25 May 2018, router manufacturers of Linksys and Netgear have posted online guides to follow so users of the equipment could secure their devices.

“The malware has a destructive capability that can render an infected device unusable, can be triggered on the machines of individual victims or en masse and has the potential of cutting off internet access for hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide,” the Cisco Talos Intelligence Group said in its report two days earlier. The group is estimating at least 500,000 devices in more than fifty countries had been infected with the VPNFilter malware at that time.

The Cisco Talos Intelligence Group reported they began seeing a “sharp spike” in the number of devices infected with malware program VPNFilter on 8 May 2018, with nearly all devices located in Ukraine. This initial spike was followed nine days later with another “substantial increase” also in Ukraine.

Kaspersky app did nothing to keep my cell phone from going nut’s. Something was pushing buttons on the screen but I wasn’t. And it kept switching screens and pushing buttons on Android 6 phone.

I’m a bit skeptical about the Russians did it, it the same old song. Why to you reboot? When you install something you reboot. Some have stand alone executive or binary files that will run before a reboot but, to put files in the registry a write is performed using exe or bin files with a autoexec bat of some type. What type of op is in the router? Although it must be mostly ROM chip there has to be some Ram. Every router has the dynamic address capability. The smallest Ram chip available? These increase in size every generation. Lots of room for a backdoor address I’m sure.

Israhell has been guaranteed the cream of access to intelligence transfers in the US and probably probably the entire UN. Second the CIA and NSA is to be suspect. Yes, Russia could do it. Everyone else on the planet could pull this stunt too with the help of a ROM chip reader.
