The Future of Smartphone Innovations Look Astounding

It isn’t a secret that smartphones changed the world forever, but there has been a stagnation in innovation for the last two years or so. However, that’s about to change soon because some amazing innovations are going to make their way onto smartphones in the near future.

Flexible Displays

The ZTE Axon M has already ventured into the category of foldable smartphones, but it looked more like two separate displays working together with the help of software, rather than being a truly foldable display. This is likely going to change in 2019, because Samsung is rumored to launch a foldable smartphone (codenamed Winner) at the Mobile World Congress next year. Reportedly, the 7-inch display will fold in half from the middle like a wallet.

The Wearable Smartphone

It is hard to comment when this technology will come into the mass market, or if there are a few prototypes floating out there already, but one thing is for certain, wearable smartphones are definitely coming in the future. It would make use of holographic projection technology to project a virtual, interactive display.

Desktop Class Performance

The answer is yes, it is time to sell off the three-year old flagship because not only are all handsets from 2015 completely outdated today, even the latest handsets from 2018 are going to seem slower in comparison to the upcoming models soon. For example, Samsung has just announced that the Korean giant is moving on from the LPDDR4X RAM technology and will be installing LPDDR5 DRAM chips in its future phones, making them 1.5 times faster. Coupled with the upcoming CPUs and GPUs in 2019 it could finally put smartphones truly on par with full-fledged computers.

Li-Fi Over Wi-Fi

While being a revolutionary technology itself, Wi-Fi has radio wave interference issues unfortunately, but with Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) the interference is expected to be minimal. The main advantage here is of course, the speed on offer, because potentially, Li-Fi can be a hundred times faster than Wi-Fi. There are still a few issues with Li-Fi that need to be ironed out, but once that is done, it is expected to become a staple feature on all phones, just like Wi-Fi is today.

Batteries that Last

There are a few smartphones in the mid-range segment that sport 4,000mAh – 5,000mAh batteries and they can indeed last anywhere between 2 -3 days on moderate use. However, that adds a significant chunk to the smartphone’s body, which doesn’t go well with flagship products. The result is that we get high-end costly smartphones that do not even last a whole day on heavy usage. That might change soon because by 2019, flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S10 are expected to sport bigger batteries, without adding too much to the heft. How they will do it exactly, remains to be seen as of now.

Of course, there’s also the talk about backscatter technology letting users charge their batteries directly from radio waves, and semi-sentient smartphones that will see what you see, but that’s probably still in the science-fiction territory as of now!
