Fire Breaks At BPCL Mumbai; Dozens Injured; One Critical

Fire broke Wednesday afternoon at the refinery of Bharat Petroleum in Mumbai injuring nearly half-ton people with one under critical situation. According to a fire brigade official several explosions were heard and two dozen of fire brigade engines as well as 5 jumbo tankers were deployed to bring the massive fire under control.

Located on the Mahul road in Chembur area the BPCL hydrocracker plant is a state-owned refinery and it is learned the fire broke at around 3 pm. Thick black smoke coming out after the explosion was visible from several kilometers away. People claim the extremely loud explosions were heard from as far as Sion and Powai places.

Company spokesperson said a leakage of an oil-water mixture caused the eruption in the compressor shed and the affected plant has been shut down. However, operations are still functioning normally.

Sources said to help in the combat of the fire several firefighting engines were also sent by the HPCL, BARC, MDL, BMC, and RCF. By late evening situations were under control.

The injured were initially treated by the BPCL Medical Centre and later shifted to Inlaks Hospital. Four of those injured are currently under observation by the medical teams and police report reveals condition of one was serious. Most of the injured suffered fractures or lacerations.

According to Mumbai fire chief PS Rahangdale two hose lines of fire engines as well as two hose lines of fixed firefighting installations were in operation to combat with the fire.
