Gasoline Storage – Good to have around when the SHTF

Every prepper worth his or her bug out bag knows the importance of having a well stocked food storage supply but when the SHTF, transportation is just as important. But what good does a car do you when the tank is empty? If the situation gets dicey, purchasing gas might be difficult (if not outright impossible). That is why it is wise to have a good gasoline storage plan in place.

Be sure you always have at least a half a tank of gas in your vehicle. If you’re like me, you might have to break the habit of letting your car run on empty before you fill up. If the gas tank is always at least half full, you’re less likely to be stranded somewhere because you’ve run out of gas.

Use containers that are made to store gas. Plastic gas cans weigh less and are less expensive than the metal gas cans. Never store gas in containers that are not made for that purpose.

Smaller gas cans are better than bigger ones. Five gallons of gas weighs about 30 pounds. Any gas cans larger than that might be hard to manage.

Don’t be conspicuous.Gas can be a valuable commodity when things get dire. It may even become an valuable bartering item. So protect your investment and don’t strap your gas tanks to the outside of your car for everyone to see. You might as well put a sign on top of your car that says, “Free Gas for the Taking!” Put your gas cans in a less conspicuous place.

Gas keeps for about a year. Just as with your food, it is important to rotate your gas supply. Label your cans and when they approach the one year mark, use that gas and get some fresh gas. If you add a stabilizing agent will help the gas keep longer.

Be safe. Check with your local fire department to see if there are any safety regulations in your area about storing gas.
