Growing Vegetables Indoors: Winter Outside? No Problem!

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for Spring. It’s been an unusually mild winter here and there hasn’t been much in the way of precipitation. Aside from the worries of a drought the plants are dormant and everything is either a shade of grey or a variation of tan. There hasn’t even been the benefit of a blanket of white snow to cover it up so I’ve got a serious case of the blahs. I miss the greenery and the flowers. I miss the fresh from the garden produce. But not to worry, here are some tips on growing vegetables indoors so that you can have some fresh vegetables without having to run to the store.

At Tipnut there are some tips for growing plants indoors. Some are practical and some are just fun. My favorite is using the bottom of the onion that you used to prepare dinner. Take the end with the roots coming out of it and plant it in soil. Keep it well watered with plenty of sunlight and soon you will have onions ready to harvest! How’s that for recycling?

If you are the patient type, take the leafy top of a pineapple, place it in some water and when it sprouts roots, plant it in soil. Within 2-3 years, you might have a pineapple.

Whole Foods has some great tips about using kitchen scraps and turning them into fresh produce. You can plant everything from mushrooms to ginger to celery and lettuce just by placing what you don’t use in soil and watering it.

When the weather gets a little nicer, we can all prepare our outdoor garden. In the meantime, why don’t you exercise your green thumb while saving money at the grocery store and plant some vegetables indoors? I’m going to give it a try.

Have you ever tried to grow produce indoors? What has worked for you and what hasn’t? Share your experience with us?
