Survival Bunkers – The Reality Of Life Underground

Survival Bunkers

The concept of using a bunker for shelter during times of disaster is nothing new. However the technologies that affect bunkers have changed radically over the past 20 years!

For the purposes of temporary shelter, most basic underground bunkers will perform as hoped. And when it comes to shelter from a passing tornado, even some homemade bunkers are adequate for the few hours of shelter needed.

There are various types of underground bunkers that are commercially available and potentially affordable by an average American. In most cases these bunkers involve what is essentially a large steel culvert (10-foot diameter pipe) that has been modified to include some amenities, basic entrance and exit, and a very basic air filtration system. Such pre-made bunkers may cost in excess of $50,000.00 plus the costs to transport and bury the bunker in the desired location, with a total cost under $100K. In reality, there are few applications where the owners of such a bunker might receive a reasonable return on the investments made into such an underground bunker. The most logical utilization of such a bunker based upon statistical occurrence of natural disasters would be to escape tornadoes, which are of course short-term events. There are potentially a few other scenarios where a bunker might serve a statistically logical purpose, however the odds of such events are remote. And in any case, there are multiple reasons why the occupants of such bunkers will in most cases be unable to stay underground long-term for more than a couple weeks.

When considering the costs related to any bunker project, it certainly makes sense to have some sort of insurance policy in place to cover the bunker and its contents from loss due to theft or vandalism. However, given the locations of most bunkers, most insurance companies won’t offer any kind of coverage, so the capital investment that is made for the bunker and its contents (which might exceed the costs of the bunker) will not be insured.

Entrance to a deep underground military bunker (‘DUMB’)

Of course if money is no object, you can purchase a sophisticated military-grade bunker costing millions of dollars, which will reliably serve the purposes related to long-term underground habitation during long-term disaster scenarios.

These ‘bunkers’ are designed by experts and incorporate technologically advanced life support systems, as well as various military-grade security measures, also costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and more. They also incorporate sophisticated measures that help to prevent mental issues from developing during such long-term underground stays, where morale can be critically affected leading to serious social and security problems.

Too many people wrongly believe that you can survive long-term underground in the cheaper underground bunkers. As just one simple example; most people don’t realize that a family of four people will produce anywhere from 5-7 gallons of water from respiration and perspiration into their environment every 24 hours. This moisture will condense on the walls and ceiling of any underground structure and will over time collect on the floor (lowest point in the bunker) of the bunker. After a week or so, the water that has condensed becomes foul with fungus, bacteria and viruses and the smell of this toxic liquid will permeate the environment. The equipment required to prevent this (just one of many problems) from happening is not only expensive, but requires a lot of energy to operate, continuously.

Another common misconception among survivalists and Preppers is that any bunker will be a secret from other people. I am sorry to break the news to these people but, OPSEC in this and many other matters has been dead for a long time. In regard to bunkers; there are hundreds of advanced satellites that are orbiting the earth which are looking-down all the time. For the past 20 years, some of these satellites have been scanning the ground looking for resources such as oil, water and mineral deposits, and in that mission, they collect and store mountains of data related to the properties of the ground below. This complex data can and is being re-accessed using re-tooled search algorithms that can be designed to find and catalog any underground facilities, even as small as a car buried underground. And now with the advent of the newest super-computers, conducting a search of the archived date and cataloging (with Latitude & Longitude data) these search results are very simple and easy for any government organization. In fact, much of the satellite data can be purchased by private parties as well as foreign entities and the same searches can be undertaken. Just one aspect of this data (and new data being collected now) is being used to locate small underground tunnels at the U.S. borders where drugs, money and people are being smuggled in and out of the U.S.

Tactically speaking, it’s also important to give careful consideration to what you would do during long-term crises if your bunker was discovered while you were occupying it. Most people don’t realize how easy it is to overcome a civilian grade bunker. Using simple store-bought infrared vision devices aggressors can locate; any infrared surveillance that might be used by the bunker to detect approaching people, the heat signature of a bunker including its air intakes and exhausts, as well as entries and exits. Once these items are noted, the bunker can be approached and overtaken using various methods; simply blocking the air vents will force the occupants to come out after a time. Of course there is also the very real risk that debris could cover and permanently block the entry and exit to a bunker, thereby trapping the people inside, at which point a bunker becomes a tomb.

Considering the use-rate, the costs and the risks, bunkers are not the slam-dunk solution that many people would have you believe.

Mix of truth and non-truths here, so wisdom is knowing which is correct.

Yes, Operation DUMSTR (pronounced ‘dumpster’) is a clandestine military project that was created using orbiting satellites to look up to 1-mile deep into the earth, searching for gold, other precious metals, underground bunkers and weapons systems, etc. based on NASA satellite technology. It is militaristic in nature, and current NATSEC plans are to use it in event of war to target hardened bunkers used for both VIP and weapons systems. YES, it could be used to find your bunker too. Will it be? Unsure, as to how much resource-time they have available to look for small bunkers. OPTION: USE fiberglass Tube bunker structures (such as is used with underground water tanks and septic systems), which in themselves, would be invisible to deep scanning – though the air cavity would still be seen.

Moisture in an underground bunker as a result of ‘respiration and perspiration’? It IS a consideration to be taken into account, as well as steam from showers, hot water, etc. Then again, there are a LOT of underground (subterranean) houses and partials that exist without overly expensive investments. Ever remodeled a basement into a family room? Same challenges, mold, mildew, dampness, etc.

The answer to ‘underground’ is simple – DEHUMIDIFIERS. You base dehumidifiers on their volume efficiency per time, versus your expected use. If there are four of you (roughly adult–sized people), then you will generally produce a gallon per person per day in water vapor. Now, you need 1-or-more dehumidifiers that can remove this volume of water from the air per the same amount of time. For my basement-conversion, I used a simple home-sized unit that could generate 1-gallon of condensate per day, based on my family size and time to use the ‘basement den’. The great advantage to home humidifiers, other than affordable cost, is that the larger ones can be plumbed directly into the water drain (or water sump) system, and because they work like an upside-down air conditioner (the condensate coil is cold, the air-out is warm), they also work as a mild heater, helping to get your room warmer and dryer still (great for a bunker or basement). You can realistically ‘dry’ your ‘bunker’ for a family of 4, for extended stay use, for less than $600.

Live in the suburbs, have a basement but can’t easily ‘put a bunker in, and hide it’ from neighbors, city zoning, planning office, etc.? TURN YOUR BASEMENT INTO YOUR BUNKER! This one is easy, just remove your basement door, stud-it and panel or sheetrock over it to make a solid wall, then rebuild the entrance as a drop-plate floor entrance hidden somewhere else in the house. A little strategic outside ‘storm window’ camouflage, so that a basement cannot be detected without detailed inspection (I used a fake rock grate at a slight angle for drainage, and completely covered my basement windows so that unless you have a shovel and go digging, you are NOT going to realize I have a basement down there).

I did my basement the easy, sensible way. Once done, even if the house burned down, I highly doubt that anyone would reveal my basement-bunker, let alone harm it. It has remote air, water and power connections that are back-up to the house’s. It has a sump pump, it’s own sanitation connections, and as the house has a still-functioning septic system independent of the modern sewer system (thanks to being built originally in 1954), it doesn’t need anything really. The best luck of all is that it is not only on city water, but has its own well, also – so in a pinch, again, being in the basement is a matter of ‘cabin fever’, not ‘can I?’

Don’t have a basement? Well, can you afford $5,000? You can easily get a permit in most places ($25-$50) and if you own the land, dig a hole with a day-rental backhoe and put a 2,000 gallon septic-type-tank in. The way most people in Texas and Oklahoma installed tornado shelters in the 80′s and 90′s was to do this very thing. Unlike the old ‘concrete vault’ shelters, that allowed water to leak in, that were often flooded with groundwater when you needed them the most, the new ‘plastic septic tanks’ stayed dry. They are easy to wire and plumb for electricity, water and septic. The larger ones have man-sized entry ways on top. They are easily modified, and most average-Joes can rent a backhoe and bury one in their back yard in a day or two. Run your power line (just like you would, if you were building an outdoor shop), run your water line the same way. If you want a toilet in it, you can either look at ‘portable toilets’ like RV’s use, or you can actually plumb your own (remember, you will need a mascerator pump and ‘Y-valve’ to do this right – this might require a plumber’s help if so).
Add a small 12v ‘boat sump’, so if you get a flood in, you can pump that flood out, and you have a ‘makeshift survival bunker’ that you can easily weather a 1-week or more disaster in.

Don’t forget food, the biggest problem in a shelter. I highly recommend MRE’s due to their long shelf life, tough packaging, and high-density nutritional value. 2-meals a day, per person, and you have a maintenance diet until you can come out. One case of MRE’s can last you a week-per-person, with a little stretch. Family of four for 2-weeks? 8-cases. That’s about $500. Easy math, affordable survival.

Don’t let this all overwhelm you. It can be done, and on a budget. Don’t let the rich guys convince you that you have to be rich to survive. You don’t.
