soybeanSprouting, ever heard of it? Have you ever tried it?

I sprouted some seeds years ago when I lived in southern California. I had purchased a sprouting kit from my friends Chris & Connie over at Life Sprouts.

But, it wasn’t until I started researching and learning about fodder that I began to wonder why seeds need to be soaked prior to sprouting. I mean, sure, I get that perhaps it had to do with hygiene and cleaning off any residual junk left on the raw seeds. What I didn’t understand is the science behind it.

I won’t get into all the ridiculous detail here because that’s way over my pay grade. But, if you ever wondered why soaking needs to happen before sprouting your grains, nuts, or seeds, here are some bullet points:

  • • Seeds come naturally covered in protective chemicals. These chemicals are several things: “enzyme inhibitors, phytates, polyphenols, and goitrogens“. Ultimately, their function is to protect the seed until the right conditions exist for it to develop further.
  • • Soaking is the catalyst for continuing development. It mimics the nature’s germination process. That process includes enzymes neutralizing phytic acid, the breaking down of proteins, and promoting the creation of phytochemicals. Google says, “Phytochemicals are biologically active compounds found in plants.”
  • • Soaking prepares the seed to offer greater nutrients and improves digestibility.

In addition to reading, I watched several videos. I found the reading to be most useful in learning more about soaking as it relates to sprouting.
