350,000 soldiers, 20,000 tanks, 2,450 warplanes and 460 military helicopters are massing in northern Saudi Arabia for a military exercise that is being called “Northern Thunder”.

This could give you an early warning if the war is going to start soon, and will help you better understand who could invade, and for what reason.

Who knows how I quickly the war will happen, and when travelling to your destination, it could be dangerous. In Australia, unless you purchase one illegally, which I suggest you not do, although a pistol could be useful, the only guns you can really buy is hunting rifles and shotguns. I suggest you buy the former, as it would be more useful for hunting. It also isn’t easy to buy one, but assuming you purchase one, then…

Take survival classes, learn how to hunt, skin gut and prepare animals, the native flora and fauna, and what is or isn’t edible, know the average temperatures throughout he year, will thick woolly blankets be neccasary?
Now your bunker may be stocked with food and water, but you should still know how to catch your own, who knows if war is declared when the pantries empty, or you get cut off from your bunker, or you simply run out. You should also learn how to camaflage yourself and anything you build, such as a storage shack, fire pit, defences, etc.

Now if a nuclear war happens, and you decide to run off into your bunker, make sure any nuclear weapons won’t be detonated near your site. I don’t suggest preparing for the apocalypse, but if you are paronoid anything that you want to be “prepared” and, or course, you’re rich enough to afford this, then this can be useful. Make sure to keep a radio or something that will allow you to monitor the status of the war, if it finishes, you want to know when to come out. Listen only, early on, people may want to take over your bunker, and later on, enemy soldiers may attack if they think that you are a threat, or they want to use your bunker.

Your best bet would be to go somewhere that is neutral, or nobody would really bother bombing. In world war 3, some countries may get scared of MAD (Mutually Assured Destructuion, not Mad Max) and stay neutral. Switzerland, Iceland, Fiji, Kribati, Tonga, NZ, these are all good places to be if a war, of the nuclear kind, starts. If possible, find out, after the war starts, which countries are neutral, and likely to stay that way. This isn’t a good option, as you could not be able to get in, use this method as a backup only, don’t rely on it.

Air Raid Warnings:

When air raids are threatened, warning will be given in towns by sirens and hooters, which will be sounded, in some places by short blasts, or in other places by a warbling note, changing every few seconds. In war, sirens and hooters will not be used for any other purpose than this.

The warning may also be given by the Police or Air Raid Wardens blowing short blasts on whistles.

When you hear the warning, take cover at once. Remember that most of the injuries in an air raid are caused not by direct hits by bombs, but by flying fragments of debris or bits of shells. Stay under cover until you hear the sirens or hooters sounding continuously for two minutes on the same note, which is the signal “Raiders Passed”.

If poison gas has been used, you will be warned by means of hand rattles. Keep off the streets until the poison gas has been cleared away. Hand bells will be rung when there is no longer any danger. If you hear the rattle when you are out, put on your gas mask at once and get indoors as soon as you can.
Make sure that all members of your household understand the meanings of these signals.

Gas Masks:
If you have already got your gas mask, make sure that you are keeping it safely and in good condition for immediate use. If you are moving permanently, or going away for any length of time, remember to take your gas mask with you.

If you have not yet received your gas mask, the reason may be that it has been decided in your district to keep the masks in store until an emergency is threatened. If, however, you know that your neighbours have got their gas masks, and you have not got yours, report the matter to your Air Raid Warden.

The special anti-gas helmet for babies and the respirator for small children will not be distributed in any district before an emergency arises.

Lighting Restrictions:
All windows, sky-lights, glazed doors, or other openings which would show a light, will have to be screened in war time with dark blinds or blankets, or brown paper pasted on the glass, so that no light is visible from outside. You should obtain now any materials you may need for this purpose.
