Astronomers: Our Galaxy Loaded With 'Ticking Time Bombs'

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Earth and everything else in our galaxy is doomed to terrible destruction as millions of suns explode.

That’s the horrendous news that astronomers just discovered.

If the human race is going to survive into the far future not only will we have to get out to our solar system and nearby stars, but master the technology of intergalctic space travel to flee our doomed galaxy.

Exploding stars will swallow up whole planetary systems.

Millions of stars spinning towards galactic destruction

Imagine a room crammed with thousands of spinning tops. The tops are all spinning at different speeds. As the tops slow down they reach a critical point and then…explode.

Now imagine that those tops are really stars–millions of them–and they’re all spinning away merrily in our Milky Way Galaxy.

When they slow they detonate taking out any planets around them and often radiating a killing spectrum of radiation outwards for several light years or more.

That is the latest worrisome hypothesis advanced by grim astronomers.

Actual photo of doomed galaxy exploding.

Evidence of such disasters abound

For several hundred years telescopes have resolved tiny specks of light into the images of distant galaxies, some so far their light has traveled longer than Earth’s existed.

Some of those galaxies are exploding. Like the chain reaction of a gigantic nuclear pile gone wild, those distant galaxies and star clusters are ripping themselves apart with world-killing explosions.

Until recently, no one thought the same thing could happen here. None suspected that–until disturbing evidence began emerging that our own galaxy is like a no-man’s land, strewn with fusion time bombs from one graceful spiral arm to another.

Milky Way galaxy loaded with supernova killers ready to explode.

The scientists aren’t happy with this frightening data. But there it is. Their meticulaous research reveals that as stars age the only thing containing their volatile nuclear cores is the rate of their spin. When it slows–as it must–they detonate as supernovae killers.

Our galaxy – loaded with mindless killers

Stars light years away can destroy scores of planets.

Some supernovae eruptions are so big and expel so much energy the explosion detonates nearby stars and a chain reaction begins that shoots out waves of deadly radiation killing every potential life form for hundreds–even thousands–of light years.

In other words, any planets with civilizations on them are history.

Planets like Earth.

Galaxy that exploded—and died—a billion years ago.

For any that enjoy sleepless night or clinical depression, the scientific research appears in a paper in the September 1st issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters and is available online for nightmarish reading.

The Universe is alive and this has been happening since time began. Old stars die, shooting debris across their galaxy. That debris, over time, is what new stars and planets are made of. The cycle continues over and over. It’s procreation on a cosmic level.

yeah ummmm this is kinda dumb. We all knew starts explode. This is not even remotely new information. Why would you waste time sharing this with people? anyone who isnt already aware that one day our sun will explode probably isnt going to read this article because clearly they have no interest in astronomy……….

Seems like a lot of generalized statements with no citations whatsoever. Not all stars explode. Ours will likely swell, shed material, shrink, swell, then shrink again. The Earth will be destroyed at some point, though other planets here will survive, and may even harbor life as the Goldilocks zone — where water can exist as a liquid — fluctuates. We’ll see it if we’re here in a few billion years. More likely than not, we will have perished long before then.

This author has an agenda. Buried in the generalized, scientific-like language is a claim that offends those that can think:
“Their meticulaous research reveals that as stars age the only thing containing their volatile nuclear cores is the rate of their spin. When it slows–as it must–they detonate as supernovae killers.”
From what I’ve learned as an astronomy buff for many years, this sentence is not only wrong, it’s exactly backwards. Stars that become neutron stars become smaller and spin faster with age. That is, if we really understand what’s going on at all. Even if accepted provisionally, the idea that stars are more likely to explode when they spin slower runs against my mental model–how about yours?
As a last insult to the reader’s intelligence, the article suggests we need to escape our doomed galaxy, as if any other galaxy is less doomed. We’re not talking about a house getting flooded in the next ten years. We’re talking about hundreds of million and billions of years.
This article preys upon those of shallow education and too timid to think for themselves. This is article is for distraction and fearmongering. The author’s agenda is closer to his own ego than to be of service to the readers.

Astronomers … any word about other planets with civilized life, Giordano Bruno had to die because he made a such GREAT discovery.Instead “astronomers” come up with an “idea” hatched overnight in order to distract people’s attention in another direction than the right.Astronomers, you are noyhink but the shit.

Do they want prepare us for something??…however,a ugly and coward way.

      @CorvidKnows:

“Stars that become neutron stars become smaller and spin faster with age.”

Need to remember stars aren’t homogenous spheres. A star’s spin slows as the star’s outer layers expand, which it does at it ages and it consumes its fuel (like a figure skater slowly extending their arms). While this is happening to the outer layer, pressure at the inner core is increasing, and electrons are fusing into neutrons (in stars of a suitably high mass). When a tipping point is reached, there’s an explosion between the inner core and outer layers. The outer layers are thrust outward, forming nebulae. The inner material is compressed inward, forming the neutron star. Because the core’s mass is being compressed, it spins faster (the skater is drawing its arms in).

So, it doesn’t become a neutron star because its spin is increasing. Its spin is increasing because it became a neutron star and got rid of the slowly-rotating material in its outer layers.

A neutron star’s spin then gradually decreases with age.

Agree with you on the other point … this is interesting stuff that doesn’t affect the survival of the human species in the slightest. The odds are relatively fair we’ll be cooked by a gamma ray burst long before our sun ever starts to undergo The Change.

      @Anon:

“any word about other planets with civilized life,”

No. As a science philosopher, Bruno got some things right, and some things understandably wrong. Neither accomplishment ever deserves punishment and death. It is apparently a lesson some religious fundamentalists have yet to learn.

Intentionally moving matter from one solar system to another may never be possible or practical, so discovery of the kind of radiation that suggests an organized civilization may never be more useful than confirmation of a hypothesis. Still fun, though.
