A bright flash or light has been reported by hundreds of people. Witness: “I Saw a Ball of Flames Falling from the Sky.” A Southeast Queensland astronomer says an asteroid about three to five metres in diameter likely detonated after it became too hot when it entered the earth’s atmosphere. There are several reports of a second light was seen across the night sky about 2am. “Sometimes these things travel in groups,” he said. “That would confirm it was travelling with a companion.”

However, Geoscience Australia has stated that there was no quake, with weather forecasters Higgins Storm Chasing saying that “it looks like a meteorite has impacted somewhere offshore”.
Higgins Storm Chasing wrote on its Facebook: “A bright flash or light has been reported by hundreds of people, this light was seen as far South as Hervey Bay and as far North as Yeppoon with a tremor being felt upon impact over the general Gladstone area and Boyne Island.”
Australians took to social media to share their experiences.
One Facebook user, Ellie Thompson, uploaded footage of the huge flash of light that was captured by security cameras.
Binny Dickinson wrote: “It felt like an explosion & before the house shook it was blinding light”.
Lynette Emerson added: “My husband was putting our the garbage bins when he saw the outside of the house light up.
“He turned around and saw a brilliant meteor or something flash overhead and disappeared over the sea.”
