Earth and Moon as Seen From Mars

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

From the most powerful telescope orbiting Mars comes a new view of Earth and its moon, showing continent-size detail on the planet and the relative size of the moon.

The image combines two separate exposures taken on Nov. 20, 2016, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The images were taken to calibrate HiRISE data, since the reflectance of the moon’s Earth-facing side is well known. For presentation, the exposures were processed separately to optimize detail visible on both Earth and the moon. The moon is much darker than Earth and would barely be visible if shown at the same brightness scale as Earth.

The combined view retains the correct positions and sizes of the two bodies relative to each other. The distance between Earth and the moon is about 30 times the diameter of Earth. Earth and the moon appear closer than they actually are in this image because the observation was planned for a time at which the moon was almost directly behind Earth, from Mars’ point of view, to see the Earth-facing side of the moon.

This composite image of Earth and its moon, as seen from Mars, combines the best Earth image with the best moon image from four sets of images acquired on Nov. 20, 2016, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

In the image, the reddish feature near the middle of the face of Earth is Australia. When the component images were taken, Mars was about 127 million miles (205 million kilometers) from Earth.

With HiRISE and five other instruments, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been investigating Mars since 2006.

Next time I’m on Mars I’ll have to check it out while munching on Mars bars that are “Out of this world” tasty good !!!

What did I just read? This was confusing and sounded like a lie from the beginning, the over emphasis on the fact that it’s “two separate images”, taken at different times and each celestial body’s most photogenic shot was then “chosen” from a set of 4 pictures. Then the “best shots” were photoshopped together to show what the panoramic view “looks like from Mars”.

Oh and this beauty….. “Earth and the moon appear closer than they actually are in this image because the observation was planned for a time at which the moon was almost directly behind Earth, from Mars’ point of view, to see the Earth-facing side of the moon”…..wtf #1 Thanks alot Genius! We WANT to see the back side of the f***ing moon! #2 Are they referring to them appearing closer relative to mars or each other? Either way, their excuse that the moon was behind the Earth “on purpose” doesn’t really support neither. Granted the moon is positioned at an angle behind Earth but its more “further back and to the side” than behind it, your perspective is still enough that you can see thier relative positions concerning distance. It appears that they are desperate to make this story believable by erasing all logical questions away with an excuse from the get go. My issue is that its not genuine, its admittedly cut and pasted and “enhanced”. Its completely fake and yet we take it as “Nasa’s truth/facts”. This article / information from Nasa is rife with bombs of “coincidences and circumstances that prevent any proof of this “view of earth and moon” actually existing. Idk just sounds like a load of crap for some reason.

One more thing, if we have cameras that can see Australia from Mars, why cant we see the moon any better than what theve shown us? Every pic is nothing more than what we can see with naked eye on a full moon.

That’s so cute that you people believe the NASA rover is really on MARS taking pictures. If they have the technology to take pictures of earth from Mars, why haven’t they ever taken a full 180 degree pan video of the earth from orbit? Why is there absolutely NO untouched photos of earth from space? All are CGI’s (including this horrid piece of shit).
We have never been out of low earth orbit, and NASA and OBUMMER have openly admitted it on video during speeches. God I wish more people would wake up. The human race really is, for the most part, as dumb as cows.
