A Dewdrop of Knowledge

Someone asked me what I experienced when I ‘prayed’. Not as a supplicant to the visual images of the grand exalted being who knows all, sees all, then dispenses justice requested by supplicants, no. Not ‘prayer’ in that regard.

I ask questions. I repeatedly ask and wait. Over time, asking merges with waiting because I know, eventually, the answer will ‘make itself known’.

These answers do not arrive in a flash like the answer to: 6 + 4 = 10. Where 10 does flash into Mind as recognition of simple truth.  Not in simple fashion like that. 

It is rather like having read a chapter or two of some unread book. Only suddenly discovering you understand the first few chapters, in a flash.

This became known by me because of an odd daily habit I developed during bad days. They were bad enough that simple distractions were welcome relief.

I accomplished this by going outside early in the morning to wait and watch for the dewdrops to shine in the early morning sun.

A vast sea of dewdrops gleam in the first morning light. As though by natures magic, the sea of glistening perfect pearls glow brightly, a few, a very few, randomly shine, not with perfect white light, not a blend, but some emit  fantastically pure hues of Green or Blue or Purples. Sometimes a lovely lavender so wondrous as to take away the breath.

I did not ponder why these perfect spheres reflected splendid beauty. Instead, I wondered why they bothered to form on the tip of blades of grass.  

That was my question. 

I stared each day full of wonder wanting to know the answer to that question. Not asking. Waiting. Watching as if ‘something’ was going to reveal itself. Some fact. Some missed association would show itself.  It never did.

Yet I kept that frame of expectant thought.  Desiring to know what caused this daily magic never left. I just learned to enjoy the marvelous show that dawns light brought me.

Then on the day.  Nothing different from any other day.  After the birds ceased their dawn chattering, in that stillness, suddenly, I knew.

I knew WHY those multitudes formed overnight on the tips of blades of Grass.

The answer was perfect for me although it has never been confirmed. Yet, it is true. A near perfect truth. 

“When the earth warms, due to the cellular construction of blades of grass, whose roots rest deep in yesterdays warmth, that warmth travels upwards and emits, overnight such heat, so minute, that particle by particle water vapors collect in the same fashion as water forms dew inside a warm house on windows while cool outside”.

This flash of understanding was so deeply felt it warmed my whole sense of Self.

I focused more on that sudden thrill than on the event itself.

Long months passed since that first revelation. 

Hindsight is ever so clear.

The perfect joy from that sudden revelation never did fade. It still thrills me to recollect, but a greater understanding did finally come clear.

I totally missed what was of greater importance, that first day, experiencing the sudden shift that comes from within as the Voice of Divine is beheld with its sudden quiet answering.

The process itself. That is what I missed.

It was not “An Answer” that was magically or mysteriously so thrilling as to cause the overwhelming sense of Joy filled memory I hold. It was the process wherein that occurred.  That is a pathway.  A self-journey.  Leading to a road. That only two feet follow.  Two feet, one Mind. A singular Self.

It is the pathway to discovering your own answers, to your own questions, whatever they might be, whenever they might occur.

All you need do is practice.  Listening.  Asking and Listening.

And two, you must remember that answers are not the journey.  Listening inward and hearing, experiencing the fabulous feedback that courses within is not the end. It is merely harmonious feedback. 

Nature fills itself with signs of wonder.

Joy is certainly one of those signs.

Yes, I learned my first experienced caused me to miss the most important realization. 

For a long while, I thirsted to understand ‘why dewdrops form on tips of dawn grass’ yet someone else, unknown, long ago, perhaps one of immense development and insight, left a sign post from something they found along their journey. 

Because of that Great Soul I know, now, what I did indeed miss.

I missed the greater part of the experience, the process. 

The process is the road. That is the greater secret. It is undeniable.

Here is what they left behind. You judge.  What further understanding might of come had I not allowed my little ego mind to become so enchanted by one simple revelation?   

Their simple verse left behind in antiquity says it all:

“Today, I learned the secrets of the sea contemplating a dewdrop”. 

Their truth amplified my own ‘truth’.

Because of that simple poetic verse, I now focus on the Art itself. The Art of Inner Listening.
