(N.Morgan) - Wikipedia defines a cult as: the term cult usually refers to a social group defined by its religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs, or its common interest in a particular personality, object or goal.
However, that definition leaves out the more sinister side to cults, in which the members are abused and isolated from family and friends, all their assets are taken and the victims are brainwashed into accepting abusive treatment as being part of a particular religion or spiritualism.
Some of the more well known and tragic cults like Heaven’s Gate and Jonestown ended in mass suicides and are examples of how completely people are dedicated to these cults.
What drives people to give up their free will and lives to follow these fanatic and charismatic leaders?

An audio recording made on November 18, 1978, at the People’s Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during the mass suicide and murder of over 900 members of the cult.
Heaven’s Gate Documentary
This documentary focuses on Heaven’s Gate cult and their mass suicide in 1997. Being led by Marshall Applewhite, Heaven’s Gate cult members believed that their souls would ascend to a spaceship following comet Hale-Bopp and would thereafter be given new bodies. The group members committed mass suicide in their Rancho Santa Fe mansion.
A media circus followed the discovery of their bodies. In the aftermath, commentators and academics discussed how Applewhite persuaded people to follow his commands, including suicide. Some commentators attributed his followers’ willingness to commit suicide to his skill as a manipulator, while others argued that their willingness was due to their faith in the narrative that he constructed.
Currently, there are thousands of cults globally.

seataka … There’s always a first time for everything. I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong. And yes it’s pretty simple, people join cults because they have low self esteem. If they are honest they will tell you they believe this other guy has a better grasp on life then they do. They follow him/her because they think some other person, with their own set of strange peccadilloes, has the answers to the meaning of life.
In truth that person only has the answers to whatever version of life they give meaning to.
Following someone off a cliff works out about the same in the end. Your left flattened, broken and asking yourself the same question that started you off on the quest in the first place … “Why?”
There is that element in some of low self esteem and wanting to belong to something in many, though I believe that’s more prevalent in the Jonestown situation. I’ve long believe what makes most gravitate to the cults, including people with self esteem way too high, is cults lead people to believe they’re special, above those common Christians, the “chosen few” of some unique knowledge you just don’t find in a plethora of mainstream, Bible believing churches, don’t see their religion being at odds with, in the case of “Christian” cults, scripture of Christianity (which I know more about than Jonestown or other religious situations), rather prefer the lies of the extra-Biblical false prophets that make their group unique, therefore, ostensibly, above all others. The Scribes and Pharisees of the New Testament were, many, such elitists, the most “churched” and exalted of their day, in their own eyes, and those the Lord Jesus had the most scorn for, Luke 18:10-14. You can get so caught up in the trappings of fake religion, going through its motions, you don’t really think you even need God, as long as you’re towing the cult line. The Scribes and Pharisees not only didn’t recognize their very God of Israel, Jesus Christ, but hated Him, with a passion to murder Him, murder God!
In any event, I think the bottom line with most is ego, feeling elite, empowered with secret knowledge, pretty much the same as a rock star likes to strut. It isn’t well received, by the unrepentant, we are filthy sinners, outside of Christ, like stupid, brute beasts, to the man, children of the devil, even our righteousness filthy rags, that all we can do is get off our high horse and fall on our faces before holy God, repent, ask His mercy and receive the Lord Jesus, with a sole faith in something, Somebody, we don’t control. (Vain man is a natural control freak.) Even after salvation, you always know you’re just someone saved by the grace of the Lord, His work, that, in fact, we have nothing to boast over, no religious bag of tricks that can save any of us. That’s way too much for the heavy ego of many the unregenerate man to take. So, he must replace the Creator with the creature, like Satan, man rises to the thrown of God, Isaiah 14:12-15, same old lie of the Garden, that man can be like God, in a sense of equality, by his own devices, even despite God, Genesis 3:3-5.

I also believe fear is at the heart of a lot, that people fear not believing they are in control, to the point of rejecting anything so scary as any force majeure that yanks their Peanuts blanket of false security in themselves and their own means. Doing some religious 1-2-3 checklist, that assures that false sense of control, is that Peanut’s blanket. Get people to believe there’s not salvation, outside the cult, and they can make real slaves of people, in worse shape than they were, before the cult, and near impossible for many to emerge from. Charlie here. Good report. You started FIRST by defining what a “cult” is. However, you left out “extreme”, “false”, “exaggerated”, in other dictionary definitions. You got your definition from Wickedpedia, a somewhat liberal organization and one must be careful of their “watered” down interpretation and must never rely on them for the “definitive” answers.
They are only good for quick rudimentary searches and not the definitive authority. Going to have to deduct some doughnuts.
But you also fail to mention what or who this article is for. Why it was necessary to talk about it? Since the real cult societies would call you one (if conservative or heaven forbid you voted for Trump!). Going to have to deduct some more doughnuts.

The book of Revelation offers us an interesting Theological dilemma. It states Rev 22:16. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. Revelation also states it is “the true sayings” of Jesus and that it is “the testimony of Christ”. If this is not “the gospel of Jesus Christ” then what is it and should we consider it accursed testimony of an angel? If it is not to be considered accursed, then it cannot be some other gospel message then what was already given previously. However, this is the conundrum, for if this is the gospel message, then why do so few understand it? There is a possibility which few consider but is the overall thesis of this apology. The reason people don’t understand revelation is because they never understood what the gospel message was in the first place! In that case, where does that put those who claim it is not essential for salvation? Do you not find it quite curious that the most “Personally” given NT book By Jesus himself, is the least understood and given the least importance for Salvation in Christendom?….There are numerous preachers and bible exegetes but as Paul said “… I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge” . Most who profess the name of Christ are feeding on doctrines of devils and the ignorant.. There are, without question, many “qualified” teachers and scholars with many years of “dedication” and “solid education”. However, teachers, no matter how well lettered or numbered in degrees; if obtained from others; who are just as equally ignorant in such matters, are just “ blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”………………

They only begin (NOT END) in a certain hour & on a certain 24 hour day ….”SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS to arise”…..NOT..”come & get (your new resurrected body) it while it is still hot, only 24 hours of solar power left”!?!

The second coming took place already and Christ promised that only HIS PEOPLE would see him ….John 14:19. Yet a little while, and THE WORLD SEETH ME NO MORE;….. [2 Cor 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ AFTER THE FLESH, yet NOW HENCEFORTH KNOW WE HIM NO MORE….(here the Context of John 14 is his second coming)…..continued…..but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20. AT THAT DAY .. 21. He that hath my commandments, and KEEPETH THEM, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and WILL MANIFEST MYSELF TO HIM……(again taking note “as he is” or 1Jn 3:2)

REVELATION 1:7. Behold, HE COMETH WITH CLOUDS; and EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM, …. There is a parallel here with ………….Exodus 24:10. And THEY SAW THE GOD OF ISRAEL : and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. 11. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also THEY SAW GOD, and did eat and drink………..But Christ said….. John 1:18. NO MAN HATH SEEN GOD AT ANY TIME; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. A person can see with their understanding and or see with their eyes…. It can see “seen” for certain that everything that Christ described was seen by the folks of that day in His coming but do they perceive that was him? …So what Christ said is true every eye saw him but the world does not see him….. With the eye they and folks still today can see everything Christ described to have taken place, but they do not “keep” ( believe and understand) his words as such they do not see him nor shall they ever.
The saints who have physical died faithful in the flesh (every man in his own order) are changed in the blink of an eye & caught up to sit on that Great white throne ( this congregation of the saints is the body of Christ that folks will answer to at the judgment and these saints will judge all men who cannot see Christ along with the rest of the world……Folks think they are waiting to see Jesus but they will NEVER see Jesus himself they will only see the body of Christ condemn them the saints judge the world (Rev 3:21; 1 Cor 6:2 et al) the saints are the body of Christ…that is the only part of Christ they shall see….only the saints shall see God face to face…..most peoples idea of the second coming & day of the Lord and the judgment is completely wrong
