The Ditch List: The Time Has Come To Move On From Max Kepler, Jerad Eickhoff & More

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

At this time of year any injury or setback could ultimately end a player’s season.  It’s extremely frustrating for fantasy owners, especially given the uncertainty, as we decide whether to hold a player or not.  Let’s take a look at a few of the injuries/news that has come out recently and how fantasy owners should proceed (keep in mind this is geared towards those in redraft formats):

Alex Dickerson – San Diego Padres
This is a poorly timed slump, with September 1 looming and the potential callups of Hunter Renfroe and Manuel Margot coming with it. Over the past two weeks he’s hitting just .217 with 1 HR. There’s a good chance the strikeouts continue to rise (9.3% SwStr% overall) and the power continues to stagnate (it was never seen as his calling card). Throw in the potential loss of AB and there’s little reason to continue holding out hope.

Max Kepler – Minnesota Twins
Maybe he turns things back around (and he did show signs yesterday, going 1-4 with 2 RBI), but the fact that he’s hit the wall hard shouldn’t be a big surprise. The power screamed of an aberration, and there’s a good chance that his current 18.8% HR/FB continues to fall. He also has struggled to hit the ball with authority (15.4% line drive rate), which when coupled with the drop in power should lead to a poor average.

He hasn’t homered since August 2, and while he should hit another one there may not be many left in his bat. In redraft formats why not try to catch lightning in a bottle somewhere else for the final few weeks.

Joe Ross – Washington Nationals
He is going to be back this season, but there appears to be a very real chance it’s as a reliever (a role he may have filled in the post season anyways). Considering that he’s not going to get a sniff of save chances, is there really any reason to continue stashing him on your bench? Even if he does come back to start, you are talking about maybe 2-3 outings at this point, and given the layoff and setbacks who knows what you would get. There are better gambles to take.

Jerad Eickhoff – Philadelphia Phillies
He’s been bad as of late, but the regression has been going on for some time:

  • July – 4.50 ERA
  • August – 4.94 ERA

With a mediocre 6.94 K/9 since the All-Star Break and wins likely tough to come by, owners may be better off using the spot to stream down the stretch.

Huston Street/Cam Bedrosian – Los Angeles Angels
We will lump these two together, for anyone keeping them stashed in hopes of sneaking a few late season saves. Street’s season is already over due to knee surgery and a blood clot will likely spell the end to Bedrosian’s as well. It means Fernando Salas will continue seeing save chances, if you truly are that desperate.
