The Drop List: Three Players We Are Ready To Move On From (Randall Cobb & More)
by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)
In order to be active on the waiver wire you have to be willing to cut bait on someone sitting on your bench. Sometimes that decision is easy, but that’s not always the case. Here are three players who had been viewed as potential contributors this season that we’d be willing to move on from at this point. At the very least, consider them on the verge of being disposable depending on the next game or two:
Randall Cobb – Wide Receiver – Green Bay Packers
He’s underwhelmed over the first two weeks of the season, turning 15 targets into 11 catches for 99 yards and 0 TD. He’s averaging just 9.0 yards per reception, a number that isn’t unreasonable considering his 10.5 mark from a year ago. As it is he’s only had one season with more than 1,000 yards (1,287 in 2014) or 80 catches (91 receptions in 2014), he’s not a go to option in the red zone and Jordy Nelson is rounding back into form.
At this point Cobb is simply not a player that we’d have faith in starting on a weekly basis, and if you can slide him to the bench and wait him out go for it. In shallower formats, depending on the alternatives on the wire, it’s not unthinkable to move on.
John Brown – Wide Receiver – Arizona Cardinals
Over the first two weeks he’s turned 7 targets (not more than 4 in a game) into 2 receptions and 22 yards. As it is he’s obviously behind David Johnson (he has 11 targets), and while maybe he has a week where he’s the go to receiver, the other options appear to be the more favorable ones:
- Larry Fitzgerald – 13 receptions (20 targets), 158 yards, 3 TD
- Michael Floyd – 5 receptions (13 targets), 69 yards, 1 TD
Keep in mind that Jaron Brown has more receptions (3) and he hasn’t received many more targets than Jermain Gresham (5) or Darren Fells (5). There are only so many balls to go around and Brown simply may not get the opportunities to produce. Worth stashing in a dynasty league, it seems impossible to trust him in redraft formats.
Arian Foster – Running Back – Miami Dolphins
Is he droppable? Probably not, but it’s very easy to imagine him falling into a complimentary role in quick fashion. It shouldn’t be surprising that he’s now banged up, and when he’s been on the field he’s done little to impress:
- Week 1 – 13 carries for 38 yards
- Week 2 – 3 carries for 9 yards
That’s good for a 2.9 YPC, and he hasn’t broken a run of more than 9 yards. His best fit is in the passing game (3 receptions for 62 yards in Week 1), and if anyone steps up in his absence Foster could easily fall into a passing down type back (if he can stay healthy). He’s definitely on watch lists and it’s not unthinkable to cut bait in shallower formats. In deeper leagues keep your fingers crossed that he gets healthy and on track, but we wouldn’t be banking on it.
