With Two Injured QB’s, the Patriots Game Plan May Be More Creative Than Usual Sunday

Jimmy Garoppolo

The Patriots might have to come up with a rather interesting game plan Sunday as they take on Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills at home in the final game without quarterback Tom Brady, who will return when the team plays in Cleveland a week from Sunday.

As of now, both of the teams’ quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo (right shoulder) and Jacoby Brissett (right thumb) are listed as questionable for the contest against the Bills, meaning that each are 50/50 to take the field Sunday.

No matter how you look at it, neither are going to be 100 percent, meaning that it will be up to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to be diverse in his game plan to not only protect whoever is under center, but also to make sure that the Pats have tricks up their sleeve to try and create confusion against the Bills.

As for both Garoppolo and Brissett, the two quarterbacks were limited in practice all week. Garoppolo will start is he is healthy enough to play otherwise Brissett will get the nod.

Massachusetts sports betting laws would look as this situation as being dire for the Pats, but remember last week when no one gave New England a chance and all Brissett did was come on against the Texans and rip them up in a 27-0 win?

The genius of what the Patriots do well is they game plan against the weaknesses of the team they are playing. The Bills gave up a ton of points two weeks back against the Jets, meaning that airing it out might be the plan, IF one of the QB’s that get some air under the ball.

Don’t be surprised though to see McDaniels allow for a trick play or two, and for the run game to be a key factor as the Patriots try to get to 4-0 before they turn the ball back over to their future Hall of Fame quarterback.

It would also not be a surprise if both quarterbacks saw action in this game. There was no doubt from last week that Brissett can run, and if the Pats see a weakness in the Bills run defense, look for the game plan to see the quick QB come in for Garoppolo on a few plays and take off, something he proved he could do against the Texans.

As for Garoppolo, the Pats offensive line needs to play well and make sure he’s kept upright. If the line can open some running holes and make sure to keep the QB healthy, whoever it is that takes the field, the Pats have a great chance no matter who to get to 4-0 and then turn the ball over to Brady as they head to play the hapless Browns a week from Sunday in Cleveland.
