I’m calling it. The Coastal Division race ended Thursday after Virginia Tech defeated Pittsburgh. The Hokies moved 4-1 in the ACC. They hold the tie-breaker over Pittsburgh, UNC, and Miami. All have lost to the Hokies. The remaining ACC schedule is Duke, Georgia Tech, and Virginia. Duke hasn’t won an ACC game this year. Georgia Tech has to go to Lane Stadium, and Virginia hasn’t beat since Virginia Tech since George Bush was president – the first term.

Sure anything can happen, but the Coastal Division race sure does seem over. Let’s review an ACC prediction that your’s truly made back in August.

Who could surprise everyone and win the Coastal?

Jeff: Virginia Tech – The Hokies have a tough non-conference schedule, but within the conference they avoid FSU, Clemson, and Louisville. They have some of the ACC’s top playmakers on offense in WR Isaiah Ford and TE Bucky Hodges. If Jerod Evans can develop quickly as QB, Virginia Tech could really surprise.

The season has played out in a way I thought possible. Ford and Hodges are big playmakers, and Evans did develop quickly.

In the Hokies win over the Panthers we saw something out of Virginia Tech we haven’t seen in several years. There’s a mental toughness we haven’t seen in a long time from Virginia Tech. QB Jerod Evans was injured and hobbling on sore ankle, and he gutted out a 2nd half as he lead the Hokies to victory. This team doesn’t wilt like in years past. Virginia Tech isn’t in the class of Clemson or Louisville this year, but already you can see the difference new head coach Justin Fuente is making. The offense is more creative, and there’s is new toughness we talked about. Virginia Tech can’t match the best ACC teams in terms of overall talent, but they are certainly moving in the right direction.

My blog partner @Hokiesmash  said a couple of weeks that to prove Virginia Tech had progressed they had to win at Pittsburgh.  I would say mission accomplished.
