San Francisco Giants Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Giants have named former Sacramento River Cats manager Jose Alguacil their first base coach and former Reno Aces manager Phil Nevin their third base coach, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Bobby Evans announced today.
“We are very pleased to add both Jose and Phil to the Major League coaching staff. They are well-respected and will serve in key roles for us,” said Evans. “They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Bochy’s staff, and we look forward to having them on the Major League club.”
Alguacil, 43, has been promoted to the big league club after having served as manager for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in 2016. The native of Venezuela, often referred to by his nickname of “Agui,” spent six seasons (1993-98) as an infielder in the San Francisco Giants farm system and returned to the organization in 2007 to work as a roving instructor. After eight seasons in that capacity, he spent the 2015 season at the helm of the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. 2017 will mark his 11th overall season with the Giants organization.
Nevin, 45, comes to the Giants after managing the Triple-A Reno Aces (Diamondbacks affiliate) the past three seasons. Nevin was named the second manager in Aces history in November 2013 and in his first year in Reno he led the Aces to a PCL-best 81-63 record and a berth in the PCL championship series. Nevin guided the Aces to a 76-68 (.528) record this past season, good for second place in the PCL Pacific Northern Division.
Nevin, the number one pick in the 1992 Major League draft, played for seven teams during a 12-year MLB career, hitting .270 with 208 home runs and 743 RBI. His longest stint came with the San Diego Padres from 1999-2005, playing for then manager Bruce Bochy. The San Diego native also spent four seasons (2010-13) in the Detroit Tigers organization (three as manager of the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens).
With the appointment of Alguacil and Nevin, Bochy has completed the coaching staff for his 11thseason with the Giants. They join holdovers Ron Wotus (bench coach), Dave Righetti (pitching coach), Mark Gardner (bullpen coach), Hensley Meulens (hitting coach) and Steve Decker (assistant hitting coach).
