(Before It's News)

Playing sport can be a lot of fun, it is a great way to keep fit, be social and competitive. Very few sports come without risk, and many come with injuries as part of the package, no matter how hard we may try and prevent it. Our legs, and knees in particular, are the areas that are particularly prone to injury for a number of reasons. With that in mind, here are some top tips for how we can look after our bodies during and between workouts to prevent any long-term damage to our knees.
.
Runners Knee
.
Just like tennis elbow and joggers’ nipple, giving it a friendly name doesn’t make these conditions any more pleasant. The biggest cause of knee problems among runners is because of the sudden and constant impact every time the foot comes into contact with the ground with every stride. The shock of this reverberates up the leg, causing damage to the knee area, while you may not notice it at first, it can build up over times and cause severe problems along the way. Padding your shoes with orthotic inserts can be an ideal solution to this pressing issue. They are the ultimate shock absorber, preventing all damage to knee area, meaning you’ll be able to run regularly without any pain or discomfort.
.
Knee Sleeves
.
Because of how much natural bodyweight out knees have to carry on a daily basis, it is not usual for athletes to suffer injuries or tears to their ACL’s, PCL’s, MCL’s, meniscus and cartilage. Anybody prone to weightlifting in the gym (especially dead lifting) is prone to any of these injuries at any point because of the extra weight and strain they are putting on the knee area. That is where a number of athletes have started wearing knee sleeves in the gym. Knee sleeves offer the strength and support of a traditional knee brace, but they are lightweight like a kneepad, but they thinner and cling tighter to the leg. This means that you’ll hardly realize you’re wearing them, as they offer you the maximum flexibility in your knee, which is crucial for squats, and something that a traditional kneepad doesn’t offer. Because they sit so tight to the knee, they encourage an increased blood flow which leads to a faster recovery between workouts.
.
Stretching
.
Never underestimate the importance of stretching before and after any match, event or training session. It is very common for many athletes to completely skip stretching and just get on with it, but that is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Stretching your muscles before any type of physical exertion is known as warming up for a reason, and exercising or playing sport without any form of warm-up is among the leading causes of serious injury. Stretching ahead of any physical exertion increases blood and nutrient supply to all muscles, improves your flexibility and increases their elasticity, reducing your likeliness of pulling a muscle or any form of serious injury.
.
Equally, it is just as important to stretch and warm down following exercise. When we suddenly stop being active, it can mean also mean the force that pushes blood around out body also stops. This can result in a build up of lactic acid in our muscles which can cause a great deal of swelling and pain. So make sure you never miss a warm down or stretching opportunity when exercising.
