Waiver Worthy: Week 10 Fallout: C.J. Prosise, Tyreek Hill & More

by Will Overton

The fantasy playoffs are quickly approaching, with some leagues having as few as three regular season weeks remaining, so playing the waiver wire has never been more important. Knowing who to claim and who to pass on, and also who makes a better claim when there are a few guys worth investing in, is paramount.

We are going to look at all the action from Week 10 and pick out the waiver worthy performances of the day, giving our own take on whether they should be added or left on the wire for someone else:

James Starks – Green Bay Packers – Running Back
The Green Bay Packers actually have a real and healthy running back on their roster, which they’ve been missing the last couple of weeks. Starks was brought back a little slow with seven carries for 33 yards, and also catching three passes for 11 yards and a TD. This might also be due to the Packers falling so far behind, so early. The only other viable option the Packers have is Ty Montgomery who is really a wide receiver.

I think Starks gets a pretty solid workload going forward, and while he hasn’t been elite in these opportunities before, he’s certainly serviceable.  A serviceable back who is getting 15 carries or more per game is worthy of an add in all leagues.

Verdict – Must add based on workload

Wendell Smallwood – Philadelphia Eagles – Running Back
What happens in the Philadelphia Eagles backfield game to game is a complete mystery. Going into this week Darren Sproles was supposed to be the go to guy and he carried the ball twice, though caught eight passes, and Ryan Matthews carried it 19 times for 109 yards. Also mixed in was Wendall Smallwood, who ran it 13 times for 70 yards after carrying it just 11 times in five games. I like what I have seen from Smallwood in these glimpses, but he could easily carry it twice next week. He’s nothing more than a flier.

Verdict – Deep league flier only

Kenneth Dixon – Baltimore Ravens – Running Back
Week by week Kenneth Dixon is getting a little bit more work for the Ravens. For the second week in a row he had 11 touches, and while that is far less than Terrance West’s 22, Dixon did more with his. He was especially active in the passing game, where he caught five balls for 42 yards on seven targets. I don’t think Dixon is going to supplant West just yet, but I do think he can keep chipping away at the playing time.

Verdict – Worth a stash

C.J. Prosise – Seattle Seahawks – Running Back
The Seattle Seahawks rookie running back burst onto the scene last night with a very solid game against the New England Patriots. The Seahawks were reporting during the week that Prosise would get a bigger role and he ended up with 24 touches, 17 carries and a team leading 7 receptions. Meanwhile, Christine Michael had just five carries and one catch. Prosise had 66 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards. We know Thomas Rawls is possibly coming back this week, and that’s bad news for Christine Michael, but I think Prosise will be fine. He showed an ability to be dynamic in the open field and Rawls can’t do that. Prosise may not get 17 carries again, but he’ll stay very active in the passing game and I think the Seahawks make an effort to find ways to use him.

Verdict – Must add in all formats

Tyreek Hill – Kansas City Chiefs – Wide Receiver
For the second time in three games Hill popped in the box score. He caught 10 passes yesterday for 89 yards, getting targeted 13 times in total. In between Hill’s solid games is a bad outing, but in that case Alex Smith was sitting with Nick Foles at quarterback. Yesterday did see Jeremy Maclin on the sideline, which I am sure helped Hill out, but I don’t think that’s the sole reason for this performance. He has talent and Smith has been looking his way lately. I like Hill going down the stretch.

Verdict – Stash in all formats

Jeremy Kerley – San Francisco 49ers– Wide Receiver
I kind of like the way the 49ers offense has been running with Colin Kaepernick at the helm, and Kerley was a beneficiary yesterday when he caught seven balls for 71 yards and a TD. Kerley got off to a great start this season, but his production has slowed since Kaepernick took over under center until this week. Kaepernick has been spreading the ball around and I don’t think any of the 49ers receivers can be trusted.

Verdict – Pass

Pierre Garcon – Washington Redskins – Wide Receiver
With a lack of TD and some early inconsistency Pierre Garcon was dropped in a fair amount of leagues. While the TD still aren’t there, the production has started to rise. He caught six passes for 81 yards yesterday on 10 targets. Desean Jackson’s absence helped, but Garcon has averaged eight targets per game over the last five games and he’s topped 55 yards in four of the last five games. The Redskins have a lot of targets and Jamison Crowder is the guy to own, but Garcon has value as a bye week fill-in.

Verdict – Not a lot of upside, but consistent enough for a bye week fill

Cameron Brate – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Tight End
The production of Cameron Brate continues to get better by the week. Let’s look at the last three weeks of production:

  • Week 8: 3 REC, 22 YARDS, 5 TGTS, 1 TD
  • Week 9: 5 REC, 43 YARDS, 6 TGTS, 1 TD
  • Week 10: 7 REC, 84 YARDS, 7 TGTS, 1 TD

You have to like the steady incline and at this point he is hands down the number one tight end and a serious red zone target. Brate has gone from week to week streamer to usable every week.

Verdict – Add as a weekly option
