(Before It's News)

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

We’ve seen the revitalization of Jimmy Graham, certainly a welcome sign given the general uncertainty surrounding the position.  Throw in big weeks from Zach Ertz and Jason Witten, giving hope of things to come, as well as the recent return of Tyler Eifert and things appear to be looking up.  Who are the best options for the upcoming week though?  Let’s take a look:

  1. Rob Gronkowski – New England Patriots – vs. Seattle
  2. Greg Olsen – Carolina Panthers – vs. Kansas City
  3. Jordan Reed – Washington Redskins – vs. Minnesota
  4. Tyler Eifert – Cincinnati Bengals – at New York Giants
  5. Jimmy Graham – Seattle Seahawks – at New England
  6. Travis Kelce – Kansas City Chiefs – at Carolina
  7. Delanie Walker – Tennessee Titans – vs. Green Bay
  8. Antonio Gates – San Diego Chargers – vs. Miami
  9. Zach Ertz – Philadelphia Eagles – vs. Atlanta
  10. Jason Witten – Dallas Cowboys – at Pittsburgh
  11. Zach Miller – Chicago Bears – at Tampa Bay
  12. Cameron Brate – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – vs. Chicago
  13. Lance Kendricks – Los Angeles Rams – at New York Jets
  14. Coby Fleener – New Orleans Saints – vs. Denver
  15. Kyle Rudolph – Minnesota Vikings – at Washington
  16. C.J. Fiedorowicz – Houston Texans – at Jacksonville
  17. Dennis Pitta – Baltimore Ravens – vs. Cleveland
  18. Julius Thomas – Jacksonville Jaguars – vs. Houston
  19. Martellus Bennett – New England Patriots – vs. Seattle
  20. Austin Hooper – Atlanta Falcons – at Philadelphia

Thoughts:

  • If there was any doubt, Jimmy Graham proved he was officially “back” on Monday night as he went off for 8 catches for 103 yards and 2 TD.  He’s now had 8+ targets in five of his past six games and with Russell Wilson getting healthy the production should just continue to improve.  It will be a battle of two of the better tight ends in the league this week (with Graham going head-to-head with Rob Gronkowski) and both should produce like Top 5 options.
  • Jordan Reed returned right before the Redskins’ bye week and proved that health wasn’t a concern (9 receptions, 99 yards and 1 TD).  Minnesota’s defense, which was once a strength, has been slipping of late and with a questionable running game Reed should be among the focal points of the offense.
  • On the season the Panthers have allowed the third most points per week to opposing tight ends.  That spells success for Travis Kelce, especially with Jeremy Maclin questionable to play (and even if he does play, how healthy he is and how much usage he’d get would be a significant question).  Over the past two weeks Kelce has turned 17 targets into 12 catches, 159 yards and 1 TD, showing the type of upside potential he has.
  • While the results haven’t necessarily been there, over the past four weeks Dennis Pitta is in the Top 10 in regards to tight end targets (23).  Couple those opportunities with a matchup with the Browns and it should yield success.  Keep him on the TE1 spectrum.
  • Jason Witten has suddenly scored in back-to-back games and is coming off his best day of the season (8 receptions, 134 yards, 1 TD).  While he’s still hard to depend on, the upside is there to keep him on radars as a potential TE1.
  • Finally the Eagles got Zach Ertz heavily involved in the offense, giving him a season high 8 targets (which he turned into 8 receptions and 97 yards).  There is no reason to think that he won’t continue to be an integral part of the offense, so if someone in your league gave up on him don’t hesitate to grab him.
