Twelve. Let’s just let that number marinate for a moment… This past Sunday there were 12 extra points missed across the NFL. The weather can be blamed for some of those mishaps, but it is hard to excuse. We know that there are a lot of mental aspects to kicking, but it is very interesting to see how extra points have been handled. Mark Dominik of ESPN introduced a very telling statistic on Monday. So far this season kickers have missed just one of 45 field goal attempts from between 32 and 33 yards (the distance of extra points) while 48 extra points have been missed.
With that said, let’s take a look at how the kickers rank for this week:
Dan Bailey – Dallas Cowboys – vs. Washington
Matt Bryant – Atlanta Falcons – vs. Arizona
Justin Tucker – Baltimore Ravens – vs. Cincinnati
Adam Vinatieri – Indianapolis Colts – vs. Pittsburgh
Stephen Gostkowski -New England Patriots – at New York Jets
Cairo Santos – Kansas City Chiefs – at Denver
Caleb Sturgis – Philadelphia Eagles – vs. Green Bay
Brandon McManus – Denver Broncos – vs. Kansas City
Chris Boswell – Pittsburgh Steelers – at Indianapolis
Stephen Hauschka – Seattle Seahawks – at Tampa Bay
Mason Crosby – Green Bay Packers – at Philadelphia
Will Lutz – New Orleans Saints – vs. Los Angeles
Robbie Gould – New York Giants – at Cleveland
Matt Prater – Detroit Lions – vs. Minnesota
Kai Forbath – Minnesota Vikings – at Detroit
After the effect that the weather had on kickers last week, let’s try not to fall victim to the elements this week. Of course as we inch closer to December that is easier said than done, and it is also possible we have a light weather week. However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to target games where weather won’t be a factor. That brings us to Chris Boswell who faces the Colts on the road in what will be a high scoring game. It is worth noting that Boswell, after missing just one extra point last season, is perfect on his 22 this year. Things haven’t been as good in the field goal department as he has missed four of his 16 kicks, but three were greater than 40 yards (two greater than 50 yards). If there ever was such a thing, Boswell is a high upside kicker for Week 12.
One of the 12 extra points that were missed on Sunday came in a dome, and it was courtesy of Kai Forbath. That is worth noting as he only has a job because Minnesota was forced to part ways with Blair Walsh, who missed four extra points. Forbath attempted four extra points on Sunday, and he converted three along with making his lone field goal attempt. For his career, he had a conversion rate of 84.1% entering this week, and he is a solid option on the road in Detroit where weather won’t be a factor.
Our search for offense takes us to Atlanta (another dome) for a game in which the Falcons are favored and the over/under is 50.5 points. In this game we have Matt Bryant kicking for the home team, who is one of the top kickers in the league. The fact that he is also coming off his bye week is worth noting since it’s possible he was dropped by an owners who didn’t want to carry a second kicker. In the two weeks that Bryant made less than two field goals he has a combined nine extra points, so he has been a consistent producer each week.
