The Dolphins have promoted linebackers coach Matt Burke to be their next defensive coordinator according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
The move was expected after 2016 DC Vance Joseph left the Dolphins to take the head coaching job in Denver. This will be Burke’s first chance at coordinating a defense after eight years as a position coach. He joined the Dolphins last season after stints with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions.
Burke’s promotion is a bit surprising at first glance as the linebacking corps of the Dolphins was clearly the weak spot of the team’s defense in 2016. Burke was not given a lot of talent to work with, however, and reportedly is well respected within the organization. He plans to utilize a 4-3 defensive scheme along the lines of former Lions HC Jim Schwartz, who mentored Burke early in his career.
