The Bullpen Report: Why Cishek Could Be Worth Stashing, Eyeing J. Wilson & More

by Nick Hutcherson

After a relatively quiet week on the closer carousel, we must continue to dig for the next guys to be in the spotlight and hopefully we can grab a few of these fellas before the price gets high!  Who should we be targeting?  Who is worth keeping a close eye on?  Let’s take a look:

Three to grab

1) Justin Wilson- Detroit Tigers
Look, Wilson has been filthy to begin the season. He has yet to allow an ER, his WHIP is microscopic and he is striking out more than 12 batters per 9 innings. If you are not convinced yet have a gander at the line on Francisco Rodriguez, a 5.87 ERA & 1.83 WHIP. The only thing keeping Rodriguez in this role is his name value. Manager Brad Ausmus and the Tigers’ brass are soon to grow tired of the consistent cardiac closing and you will want to own Justin Wilson as the save chances should be there.

2) Sean Doolittle- Oakland A’s
He is available in way to many leagues. He is, after-all, on the short-end of a closer committee with Santiago Casilla. Take note, Doolittle is the better pitcher and if he threw with his right-hand he would likely already be the closer in Oakland. The talented lefty is primed to outlast the combustible Casilla. I believe that Doolittle will be answering the final bell in Oakland before long.

3) Bud Norris- LA Angels
In no way am I endorsing the skills here, but with Cam Bedrosian on the DL (with a groin injury that we haven’t received a whole lot of information on yet) Norris has to be owned as he appears to be the guy who stands to receive the bulk of the save chances in Los Angeles.

Two to watch

1) Nate Jones- Chicago White Sox
David Robertson is having a great year so why is Jones on this list? The answer lies in Washington. When Shawn Kelley was named the closer, he was named the closer*, note the asterisk. The Nationals are worried about Kelley’s long-term durability so they thought they would pair him with Koda Glover and allow Glover to cover the 9th on occasion in order to keep Kelley’s workload in check. Well guess what? Glover just hit the DL and Blake Treinen is a gas can at the moment. This was the most likely landing spot for Robertson all spring and the time has never been more right for Washington to strike a deal for Robertson and thus Jones vaults into the 9th inning in Chicago.

2) Steve Cishek- Seattle Mariners
See the reports on Diaz this week? The Mariners believe part of his problem to begin the season has been inconsistent work, so they are looking at using him more often and possibly for multiple innings. Does that sound like a firmly entrenched closer to you? Cishek has plenty of experience handling the duties and the Mariners just might turn Diaz into Andrew Miller and plug Cishek into the closer’s role upon his return from the DL, a return that is set to happen soon.
