Colts RB Christine Michael Heads to IR; Run Game Remains in Flux for 2017
The Indianapolis Colts this last week put veteran running back Christine Michael on the injured reserve list, putting playing in 2017 severely in doubt.
It’s a better bet with a Hollywood casino bonus code that Michael, who inked with the Colts back on June 1st, is going to have an uphill battle if he’s going to have any impact in 2017.
Michael has played 37 career games with Green Bay, Seattle and Dallas over the last four seasons, and while he has shown spurts of being a solid running back, there’s been too much baggage for him to be a top flight player that many have at times speculated that he would be.
To replace Michael on the roster, the Colts signed running back Troymaine Pope. The 5-foot-8, 205-pound Pope played four games with the Seahawks and New York Jets last season, finishing with 12 carries for 44 yards.
the team also made a couple other roster moves, inking two receivers, Harvey Binford, and Fred Brown and linebacker Jeremiah George.
To clear space on the roster, the Colts waived receivers Marcus Leak and Al-Damion Riles and defensive tackle Kristjan Sokoli.
Back to Michael, he was listed third on the depth chart when inked, being veteran Frank Gore, who continues to defy time with the way he’s been able to maintain his strong play despite being now 34 years old.
The team is best looking out there to make sure that they are on the lookout for their running back for the future.
Last season Gore ran for 1,025 yards with four touchdowns, putting up 3.9 yards per carry, this after putting up 3.7 yards per carry two seasons ago when he ran for 967 yards and six touchdowns.
The signing of Pope is interesting. He’s another project in the making, and a player that as stated above has already been with two teams, the Seahawks and the Jets.
If the team isn’t comfortable with Gore, the backup to start the season will be Robert Turbin, who led the Colts with seven touchdowns last season but ran for just 164 yards.
Look for the Colts to continue to be active up until training camp looking for healthy running backs in the free agent market. They also will look at other rosters to see what players might get released.
For now, it’s up to Gore and Turbin to get the job done, a job that will have to be better for the Colts to win in 2017.
