Ravens Fall to Bears in OT, 27-24

The Baltimore Ravens fell to the Chicago Bears in Week 6, 27-24 in overtime. RSR staff react to the loss here:

Todd Karpovich

— Chicago tried to hand the game to the Ravens, who simply could not capitalize on the mistakes. A costly, costly loss.

— The loss is entirely on the offense, which did not manage a touchdown.

— Flacco had another bad game, going 24 of 41 for 180 yards with two interceptions. He had a 48.8 passer rating. However, his receivers had several key drops. Both of his interceptions came off deflections.

— The defense allowed some big plays in the OT, but they were left on the field entirely too long.

— This is the type of loss that could spark some serious change within the Ravens organization.

A couple improbable special teams touchdowns by Bobby Rainey and Michael Campanaro gave the Ravens a chance to win this game. Let’s be real though: they didn’t deserve it.

Of course, they had a GOLDEN opportunity in overtime when the Bears punter, who was on fire all day, shanked one. They took it and, naturally, went three and out. Just as they had done five times prior on the afternoon.

Breshad Perriman took a long completion from his gut and threw it into a Bears defender’s hands (should have been a flag on the play, but hey, whatever, right?). Chris Moore tossed another right to the Bears for a pick six. Campanaro earlier dropped an easy third-down conversion. The Ravens wasted a timeout late in the game because they didn’t have enough men on the field to kick a field goal – a TO they could have desperately used near the end of regulation.

Throw in that they still can’t stop the run without Brandon Williams, the sure-handed Jeremy Maclin was the latest starter to miss the game with an injury, Dean Pees took WAY too long to dial up pressure on Mitch Trubisky…and the end result is exactly what the Ravens deserved in this game: another embarrassing loss.

Hate to say it was predictable, but it absolutely was. I picked the Ravens to win 23-20 in overtime. Of COURSE they would play down to another opponent. OF COURSE they would back up an uplifting win with a listless defeat.

That’s so Ravens.

The Ravens made a bad Bears team look good today and I guess we should have seen it coming. We all felt good after last week when the Ravens hung 30 on a bad Oakland defense, but that was all smoke and mirrors like Weeks 1 and 2. Any time the Ravens face a capable offense their defense plays poorly and anytime they face a good defense their offense is non-existent.

This is a poorly coached team that lacks the focus to play consistently good football and match wits with other capable coordinators and head coaches. So there will be weeks where they look good and other weeks where they look like the team we saw today. Until they decide to make some wholesale changes, we should all get used to it.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we “think” we can predict what this time will do? They should have won today and won their next 3 games. Plus, with Aaron Rodgers going down, they should win their next 4 games.

But no. We have NO IDEA. This team went back to the old Raven way… great special teams, really good turnover-producing defense, good run game, and terrible quarterback play. Now, to Flacco’s defense, the two INTs were not his fault. He hit the receivers in the hands, and he has been given no help in the passing game. Just awful. But he isn’t helping himself either.

And clock management? Don’t even get me started. I have no idea what this team will do from one play to the next… and I don’t mean because the play-calling is keeping teams off-balance. I mean because there is absolutely NO EFFORT at times.

So frustrating. I had brain surgery at the start of the year, and I might need heart surgery at the end of the year because of this team.

I just had a convo about the Terps game yesterday and said “Northwestern owned the Ravens.” Meant the Terps, but it isn’t far fetched to beat the Ravens, is it?

So many key failures and shortcomings in this game… the biggest standouts will be 1) the idiotic timeout on Tucker’s FG to pull within 8 (13 Seconds on the play clock), 2) Weddle’s attempt at a strip turned Jordan Howard 50-something yard run on the final drive, and 3) of course the whiffs leading to Kendall Wright’s 1st down and eventual Gould game winning field goal.

The coaching was horrendous, the play calling on offense was beyond atrocious, Flacco didn’t help his efforts, Joe’s receivers hit in the hands/chest twice leading to 2 picks by a Bears team without an interception all season… the fan base has been patient. But I can’t imagine they have much more of that left in the tank. Changes need to come and soon…

We’ll have more knee-jerk reactions to the latest in a long line of debacles as they roll in…
