The Chiefs Have to Be Careful with Mahomes; Can’t Force the QB Back Too Soon

There was plenty of buzz on Sunday when a report came out from ESPN’s Football Insider Adam Schefter, who reported that Chiefs MVP quarterback Pat Mahomes may be back before the few weeks he was expected to miss.

For many it just sounds like disaster, trying to rush back a player off a knee injury well before he’s ready. If you look at bet-wv.com the Chiefs are still in a good position, even with Matt Moore handling the quarterback duties.

Going back to Mahomes, the injury took place during Thursday’s 30-6 route of the Denver Broncos in Colorado.

The quarterback was trying to sneak for a first down near the goal-line, and was wrapped up with his knee getting buckled in the process.

After several minutes of Mahomes being down, Moore played the rest of the way, giving him his first meaningful snaps in two years, and played well enough for the team to not go into panic mode to try and sign another quarterback.

”You saw production from him for a number of years. He was in those situations where people would debate he should be the starter or the other guy should be the starter, wherever he as,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

”You saw that ability to start football games and win.”

It’s now up to Moore to keep the Chiefs ship sailing in the right direction. If you look at their next few games, they have matchups with the Green Bay Packers a week from Sunday, then face the Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.

The game against the Titans will be a nationally televised Monday night game November 18th.

Now at 5-2, the Chiefs will get their bye the following week, so as of now it’s not out of the question that if everything with the rehab goes well that Mahomes could be back either for that Monday night Tennessee game, or even the game against Oakland, which is set for December first.

At the end of the day, this franchise cannot afford to just force Mahomes back in, and they have to be smart about the player and his knee.

”He’s an inspirational guy,” Moore said about his teammate in Mahomes.

“He said a bunch of stuff about the team win, gave a bunch of props to the defense. The defense played outstanding. Just kind of brought us together and broke us down.”

Give Moore a chance to lead this offense for a few weeks. As a veteran guy he should be able to get it done, and if not then you start to think about bringing Mahomes back sooner than later.
