NEW YORK—Actress Cynthia Nixon and WE TV invited women to make a pledge of 24 hours of volunteer service in 2010 today on Times Square. Ms. Nixon has promised to fulfill her 24 hours with services to the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) a NY state nonprofit organization that seeks to provide every child with a high quality public education. WE TV’s President and General Manager Kim Martin joined Ms. Nixon at the press conference.
WE TV held a press conference on Thursday to introduce the initiative, with a mobile unit called the “Resolution Center” that was equipped with digital kiosks that allowed people to sign up to volunteer and sign a “digital pledge.”
Interested volunteers can also log on to www.WEvolunteer.tv through Jan. 31 to pledge their hours and choose a project or a cause.
The volunteer pledge program is part of WE TV’s three-year program to inspire women to volunteer time to issues they are passionate about, called “What a Difference a Day Makes.”
Ms. Nixon said in a statement “I am so proud to support WE TV’s WEE Volunteer and its “Pledge 24 in 2010” campaign. We all know it’s vital that we reach out to help lend a hand. As a mother of two children it is very important to me that our schools help all kids reach their potential.”
The AQE is a statewide nonprofit coalition of over 230 organizations of parents, children’s advocates, schools, teachers, clergy, and others that aim to empower and inspire a lifelong commitment to responsible, philanthropic involvement.
