CFB Trenton commander charged in murders of two women

The Canadian Press - BELLEVILLE, Ont. - The commander of CFB Trenton appeared in a Belleville, Ont., courtroom Monday and was formally charged with the murders of two women and the sexual assaults of two others.

Colonel Russell Williams, 46, of Tweed, Ont., walked confidently into the provincial courthouse in hand and leg shackles, wearing a blue prison-issue jumpsuit and blue booties.

He's charged with the first-degree murder of 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd, of Belleville, and 38-year-old Marie Comeau, a corporal with CFB Trenton who lived in nearby Brighton.

Williams replied that he understood the proceedings against him.

He was remanded in custody and will appear by video on Feb. 18.

A publication ban was ordered as is typical in bail hearings, and there is a publication ban on the names of the sex assault victims.

A handful of distraught-looking people were in the courtroom and as Williams got up to leave, one man uttered an obscenity.
