Top Chinese Officials Indicted for Genocide, Torture

Getting sued for genocide in 30 countries should be keeping Jiang Zemin awake at night. The former Chinese Communist Party leader, along with four other high-ranking officials have been sued in Spain in a groundbreaking case for their role in the persecution of Falun Gong.  Here is the story from The Epoch Times:

This is the first time that a court has recognized the campaign against the group as legally fitting the definition of genocide. If the defendants were in Spain, the Court could call them before the Judge for a hearing.

“This historic decision by a Spanish judge means that Chinese Communist Party leaders responsible for brutal crimes are now one step closer to being brought to justice,” said Carlos Iglesias, a local lawyer from the Human Rights Law Foundation, representing the plaintiffs.

Jiang Zemin is widely acknowledged as the initiator and primary driver behind the campaign launched in 1999 to “eradicate” Falun Gong. According to Chinese regime statistics at the time, an estimated 70 to 100 million people were practicing the discipline that combines slow-moving exercises and spiritual teachings.

According to a press release, the defendants have 4-6 weeks to reply and could subsequently face extradition if they travel to a country that has an extradition treaty with Spain. The decision was taken under the legal principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows domestic courts to hear cases of genocide and crimes against humanity regardless of where they occur.

The interesting part is that the Chinese's own Foreign Ministry appears unaware of the fact that more than 70 civil and criminal complaints have been filed against Chinese officials in 30-plus national courts on six continents for their role in the persecution of Falun Gong, and the case in Spain is the latest and biggest development.

An exiled Chinese human rights lawyer says it’s a landmark and historic case, while staffers in the Chinese foreign ministry say they’ve never heard of it.

Five high-ranking Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials have been indicted in a Spanish court for crimes of torture and genocide against Falun Gong practitioners—but when asked, one young lady at the Foreign Ministry was surprised, and said: “I didn’t think they’d really sue them overseas.”

Apparently the officials could get up to 20 years - but they will need to be lured out of China first - the laws don't allow for extradition from their own country.
