After two days of searching, a Washington state police shot and killed Maurice Clemmons, who allegedly shot four police in Tacoma.

In a recent CBS report, Clemmons was seen in a stolen car at approximately 2:45 a.m. and the officer shot the suspect several times.

"He wouldn't stop," [Assistant Police Chief Jim] Pugel said. "The officer fired several rounds."

"This is a tragedy," said interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz. "Nobody feels good about any of this."

After shooting him dead, police found Clemmons had a gun belonging to one of the murdered officers and a serious gunshot wound from the coffee shop shootout.

Clemmons had some "bizarre encounters" with churchgoers and with Bishop Bernard Jordan in New York state. According to the NY Daily News:

Seattle cop-killer Maurice Clemmons drove across the country to New York in June to see a Manhattan minister, declaring God told him to make the trip.

He disturbed a June 13 prayer service, trying to rush the stage and yelling.

The next day, he approached Bishop Bernard Jordan at a gala banquet to say he was on the lam from the police.

"Then he said he was Jesus. I was kind of shocked," Jordan told the Daily News.

The nearly two days of anxiety deepened concern about how effective the judicial system is at rehabilitating violent felons like Clemmons — or keeping them behind bars and away from harming the innocent. The search for Clemmons consumed everyone. The steady drone of helicopters could be heard for miles around the Leschi neighborhood in east Seattle, where agents believed Clemmons was hiding in a relative's house. Streets surrounding the home were blocked off and residents turned away; people who lived in the area were told to stay indoors and keep their homes locked up. But when the cops broke into the targeted house, the suspect was not to be found.
