Getting Your Head Impaled Won’t Kill You, Study Suggests

From Dateline Zero – Here’s a medical study that I know many of you have been begging for: A case-study in the Lancet (haha!) Medical Journal revealed that it would be possible to have a javelin rammed through your face and not kill you. (There’s a subscription required for the medical journal.)

Check out the horrific 1550 portrait of unfortunate Hungarian Gregor Baci. As you can guess, there’s been speculation as to the authenticity of the claims; that a man was impaled through the head and survived.

That painting comes from the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, a cabinet of curiosities created by Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria in the 16th century. Quoting the Wikipedia article: “Representing an excellent example of a late Renaissance encyclopedic collection of its genre, it continues to be displayed at Ambras Castle near Innsbruck, the same setting since its inception.”
