Octopus Walks on Land at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
Anyway, animals in other enclosures started disappearing shortly after the octopus arrived (fish, crabs, etc). At first we assumed they were eaten by another fish in the tank, which happens sometimes. Then it became clear something weird was going on and the teacher suspected some foul play by a student, so he set up a camera.
Turns out, the octopus was climbing out of his tank at night. He squeezed himself through a small opening in the top that was less than the size of a quarter, a process which took about 1/2 an hour as I recall, then “walked” down the lab counter, squeezed himself into another tank, and ate the inhabitants. Then he would reverse the process and go back to his own tank so no one was the wiser.
And this is why octopus scare the shit out of me. He was not only smart enough to sense there were fish and crabs and such in tanks 5 feet down the counter, he covered his own tacks and went back to his tank to hide the crime.
