White Gables Yard Sale Weekend

I’ve been so busy, I’ve hardly had time to sit down and write!

For the last 2 days, all the residents of White Gables put our white elephants together and had a big yard sale. Final take (put all together) was just over $200! Of that, only about $30 was ours, but then– we’ve downsized so actively over the years that we have little in the way of ‘junk’ to sell. It was an active weekend and quite successful, hanging out and meeting some locals while plying our wares. Not a bad way to spend a weekend, although I wouldn’t want to do this more than once a year.

The extra pocket cash is nice, but mainly we all wanted to open up some space in our homes and shared storage room. We sold, traded or gave away an early 2000′s model large screen TV, 2 large desks, a huge dresser, and various shelves, cases, luggage, lamps, vases, and other large items that just took up WAY too much space. A lot of smaller items as well, of course. We wrote everything sold down in a ledger and counted out everyone’s take at the end, and there were no issues of concern at all. Most of what didn’t get sold is being donated to the Salvation Army.

Result: A lot more room for everyone, including our soon-to-be new neighbors so they have a little space in storage as well.

It was very casual and comfortable. Several people coming up to check things out remarked upon the quiet space and the garden that they could see from the parking lot. Not a lot of people even know our little area exists, so we had a couple of nosy locals just drive down to investigate a little. We just shrugged over it and then laughed.

I would definitely call it another community bonding activity. None of our stuff would have sold as well in smaller batches, plus we had relief workers to cover breaks, lunches and trips to the bathroom. Once again, being able to get along with people has its upside demonstrated reliably.
