Shambhala; the UFO source?

In David Wallechinsky and Irving Wallace’s The People’s Almanac #3 [Bantam Books, NY, 1981] is an interesting piece, The Continuing Search for Shambhala [Page 635 ff.].

“ Is there really a hidden galaxy of minds living in seclusion in an inaccessible part of Asis, or is it merely a myth? Shambhala, the ‘Hidden Kingdom,’ is thought of in Tibet as a community where perfect and semiperfect beings live and are guiding the evolution of humankind. Shambhala is considered to be the source of the Kalacakra, which is the highest and most esoteric branch of Tibetan mysticism. The Buddha preached the teachings of the Kalacakra to an assembly of holy men in Southern India. Afterwards the teachings remained hidden for 1,000 years …

“Tibetan religious texts describe the physical makeup of the hidden land … it is made up of eight regions, each surrounded by a ring of mountains … the capital is surrounded by mountains made of ice, which shine with a crystalline light. The technology of Shambhala is supposed to be highly advanced; the palace contains special skylights made of lenses which serve as high-powered telescopes to study extraterrestrial life, and for hundreds of years Shambhala’s inhabitants have been using aircraft and cars that shuffle through a network of underground tunnels … Shambhalans acquire … powers as clairvoyance, the ability to move at great speeds, and the ability to materialize and disappear at will …

“Strange sightings in the area where Shambhala is thought to be seem to provide evidence of its existence. Tibetans believe that the land is guarded by beings with superhuman powers. In the early 1900s an article in an Indiana newspaper, the Statesman, told of a British major who, camping in the Himalayas, saw a very tall, lightly clad man with long hair … noticing that he was being watched, the man leaped down the vertical slope and disappeared. … the Tibetans with whom [the major] was camping showed no surprise …; they calmly explained that [the major] had seen one of he snowmen who guard the sacred land …

“A more detailed account of these ‘snowmen’ guardians was given by Alexandra David-Neel, an explorer who spent 14 years in Tibet. While traveling through the Himalayas she saw a man moving with extraordinary speed … He seemed to lift himself from the ground, proceeding by leaps. It looked as if he had been endowed with the elasticity of a ball, and rebounded each time his feet touched the ground …

“There have been a number of strange aircraft sightings in these areas. During Nicholas Roerich’s expedition through central Asia in 1925-1926, his party suddenly noticed a huge disk in the sky. Three [of] his men with binoculars watched a large spheroid body moving very fast, suddenly changing direction and disappearing behind the Humboldt mountain chain … Two airships were also observed by British mountaineer Frank Smythe while on Mount Everest in 1933. He recorded having seen two dark objects, one with squat wings and the other with a sort of beak, surrounded by a pulsating aura, at an altitude of 26,000 ft. The most recent sighting was made near Shillong Assam, in India in 1967. A whirling disk hovered 650 ft. above the ground, and then dived into a river creating a huge vortex and a lot of noise. It then reappeared, ascended, and flew in a zigzag pattern over the jungle until it disappeared …

“ … lamas believe that although Shambhala is invisible to most people, it … could [according to Western scholar Edwin Bernbaum] exist on another planet or at the outer edge of our physical reality … but was once a real kingdom which has now faded into the realm of myth.
