Brief Cold Spell A Blessing

We’re getting frosts, and icy temps, and even a little snow and ice around Seattle this week.

I’m not sorry though– for one simple reason:

Mosquitoes!

We had such a mild winter that they were everywhere by late January. People are not outdoors this time of year to police their own water collector areas, so no one was making sure the buggers didn’t have breeding pools. In any event, no freezing meant blood suckers galore.

Then the first freezing night hit– and there were, no exaggeration, dead bodies of mosquitoes all over the place. Even on the cars! A veritable carpet of tiny vampires! Bleh! I’ve never seen so many in my life except MAYBE by ponds in Ohio in the dead of summer.

I like a break from cold same as anyone, but NO cold is not so good! We needed a real winter (besides the snowy Xmas we got, that is) to put on the breaks with the bugs.

Didn’t stop the early migrating birds from singing every morning, though. They expect spring very soon, so I expect this spell to be no longer than a week and spring should shove its way in from there.
