In my posting of March 6, 2018, about author Elisabeth Åsbrink’s book 1947, where I make the point that the Roswell and Ken Arnold “flying saucer” episodes are not mentioned, indicating the insignificance of those two event, comments from UFO aficionados tend to defuse my opprobrium.
Some wrote that the author couldn’t cover everything, others writing that she wasn’t attuned to what was obviously important, and still others continue to insist that both UFO cases were (and are) significant, the author remiss as an observant historian.
But I have a volley of almanacs for 1947, and none include either UFO case or any other.
And the eminent People’s Almanac books (three volumes) by father/son team Irving Wallace and David Wallechinsky don’t mention either case in any of them although they do have other UFO incidents beginning in 1948 and including such humdingers as the Flatwoods “monster” sighting, the Betty/Barney Hill “abduction, et cetera.
My initial point was and remains that Roswell was a non-event (as far as historians were and are concerned) and Kenneth Arnold’s salvo rested in the hinterlands of oddball fantasy where it resides, for many, today.
And let me make this further point: those with discerning brains and academic credentials know what is important (historically and otherwise).
Thus, the so-called linch-pins of ufology – Ken Arnolds bevy of flying saucers and Roswell – are anything but.
They are factoids (of fantasy perhaps).
To keep insisting that the history of 1947 (or even humanity) is incomplete without mention of the two iconic UFO tales is madness of a very special kind, a madness that goes beyond obsessive foolishness and almost descends into a psychotic disorder.
