Those Naval encounterd UAPs are drones?
This month’s issue of Aerospace & Defense [October 2019] is almost all about drones.
There are several articles about drones, and a few struck me as particularly interesting.
The first (pictured above) opens with “The use of artificial intelligence (AI) based machine learning technologies in autonomous vehicles is on the rise.” [Page 6 ff.]
The article, by Mike Southworth, Senior Product Manager, Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions, provides details about the computer systems inside drones.
His details provide grist for a possible explanation of those 2004 and 2015-2016 UAPs seen or encountered by some Naval pilots:
“The DuraCOR 312 [internal AI computer system] … uses minia- ture versions of traditional rugged circular military connectors that, when mated, provide full sealing against dust and water. In fact, the chassis can be fully immersed and will experience no water ingress at all.” [Italics mine]
“The DuraCOR 312 is fully compliant to extremely demanding … environmental, power, and EMI conditions, including high altitude, wide temperature, humidity, extreme shock, and vibration and noisy electrical environments.”
The selling points are summed up with this, ” … we can bring proven, deep learning technologies … that are viable for the unique requirements of unmanned military platforms.”
On page 27 is a piece Defeating Commercial Drone Threats with Open-Source SDR in which there is this:
“Today, it’s not uncommon for a drone to have active object avoidance and autonomous modes. When a drone isn’t under direct pilot control, it makes C2 countermeasures difficult, thus, it is common to disrupt or deny GPS with either spoofing or jamming.”
The conclusion of the piece, by Scott Torborg, CTO of SkySafe, states, “Drones are useful technology; however, some seek to exploit this disruptive technology with bad intent … most drone defense development targets military applications.” [Page 28]
And finally, on page 37, under Drone Control System (from Kongsberg Geospatial in Ottawa, Canada) is this:
“The system leverages a real-time DDS bus architecture and fusion technology that allows operators to simultaneously track and operate drones in the air, on the water, and underwater.” [Again, Italics mine]
