How Will People Act After TEOTWAWKI?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

\”Are YOU Ready?\”

What can you expect from people after TSHTF?  This is an idea I’ve deliberated over and thought I’d share with you.

I think people – given a choice – tend to stick together with like minded people, which is one of the reasons you came here today to read this blog.  And that’s great.  Who wants to hang out with someone that constantly disagrees with you or challenges your every thought?

The danger with this is that without someone to challenge you it makes it harder to grow as a person or a team.

Having said that here’s a list of types of people that I tend to clump together in groups.  They may or may not work together, but may pose a significant threat.  Not all the following should be considered dangerous, but keep in mind that when things get really tough family and close friends come first and everybody else comes second.

First of all, let’s categorize people after TEOTWAWKI.  And I’m assuming something big has happened for the sake of this discussion.  Social breakdown, economic collapse, that kind of thing.

Gangs

There’s been a lot of speculation written about gangs and I think this comes down to a matter of where you live.  If you’re in a city where there’s a lot of gang activity then they are likely to cause problems.  If you live in the country far removed from gang activity then you’re probably less likely to run into them.

Threat:  armed, unafraid to use violence, some gangs have a strong honor code and will fight for their perceived “family”.

Bikers fall under the gangs category.

Druggies and Alcoholics

And by these I’m talking about the people who are truly addicted to their drug of choice.  Once society breaks down there’s going to be a lot less of the types of drugs it takes to keep these people happy.  Once the drugs are gone those people looking to feed their addiction will get desperate and could become a danger to those nearby.  I don’t think they’ll go too far out of the cities and towns they live in, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to keep an eye for people like this.

The Unprepared

The unprepared are the people who walk around saying, “The government will take care of us.”  The government might want to take care of you and may even have the best intentions when it comes to helping out after an emergency, but I’m not going to wait around with my hands in my pockets looking for a handout.

I think the people in this category will wait for a certain amount of time – let’s say three days – and then all hell will break loose when they find out that Uncle Sugar isn’t there to take care of them.  When the store shelves are empty and people are starting to get hungry is when you’ll start to see those standing around waiting for a hand out become those demanding food as their right as citizens.  Shortly thereafter will come food riots.

This is where you OPSEC will be very important.

The Prepared

This is the category you and I fall under.  I won’t be out actively looking for trouble, but if someone shows up with an attitude I won’t hesitate to ask them – nicely the first time – to keep on moving down the road.

Gun Nuts

These are the folks who think prepping simply means adding more guns and ammo to their arsenal.  If they have enough guns they’ll be able to take whatever they want from whoever has it.  Some of these folks may have military training or know enough about tactics to be a threat.  Nothing wrong with being a gun nut – I’m a bit of one myself; however, when their idea of prepping is to come take what you have through the use of superior fire power, then we have a problem.  Be wary of this group.

Government/Military

It may be that there are pockets of military units operating in your area.  If this is the case and they are running rogue the best bet is to avoid them as much as possible.  You can not win a firefight against a trained military unit.  If you think you can then you have obviously never been up against one and have them bound on you, or drop a few mortars or some artillery on your position.  Do NOT engage the military.

 Ordinary People

Ordinary people make up most of what I consider “civilization.”  They come in all shapes and sizes and can and will do unpredictable things during times of crisis.  One thing we’ve never endured here in the United States for many years is any kind of prolonged event that affected the entire country as a whole.  There have been many smaller regional disasters such as storms, earthquakes, wild fires, etc, but nothing that has taxed the entire country.

This is when funky things will start to happen.

As I drove through town this morning I watched those around me and here’s what I saw:

elderly people limping along, young people walking to and from work, a homeless woman taking cans out of a trash can, people living off the state sitting outside their government paid for apartments, construction workers tearing up a street, delivery people bringing goods to local markets, shop owners selling ice creams, truck drivers, cab drivers, and so on…

All of these people will have their own reaction to an event like an economic collapse:  confusion, fear, anger, denial, much the same as having a loved one die.  If all the money in your pocket and your bank accounts was suddenly worthless how would you feel?  Close your eyes and imagine that you only have a quarter of tank of fuel and suddenly gas is so expensive you can’t afford it or the lines are so long there’s now way you’ll be able to get any.  Food is gone off the super market shelves and the power is out or flickering.

How would you feel?

Now imagine millions of people all feeling the exact same thing only they’re not as prepared as you are.  Their idea of stocking up is two cans of soup and a container of oatmeal and now they might not be able to eat if they don’t get some food right away.  What do they do?  Beg?  Steal?  Threaten? Negotiate?  Riot?  I suppose it depends on the situation, but like I said there hasn’t been a challenge like this to the United States in a long long time.

So there you have it.  Some thoughts and ideas on people and how they’ll act after TSHTF.

What do you think?  I know you have some thoughts on the subject.

At first,, people will be camping out in parking lots of anywhere emergency food is being dropped.

Think about how people are hanging out at Walmarts every morning for ammo.

Almost every Walmart has people showing up starting around 4am and waiting till 7am to get 3 boxes. I know I’m doing it. All the ammo is gone in 10mins.

The same thing will happen with food but on a huge scale, I think the nieghbors will be the biggest proplem. Heres why.

OK, they are out of food and almost out of gas. So they get on their bikes, and go to EVERY SINGLE HOUSE in the entire neighborhood. And NOT just once, they will come back multiple time, asking, begging, on thier knees crying begging,,,,,,,,, then fighting mad. Beware.

I have my ideas on family also but thats another story..

yeah Ive thought about that, my neighbors have a couple of hot girls that come over on occasion, i can imagine them coming over to see if i can ”help ‘em out”. i sure would hate to shoot a pretty girl but you’re right, they’ll keep coming then they’ll come one last time! either their last time or your last time. I’m thinking you can’t afford to help any ‘stranger’, because then they’ll know you have. that’s bad news.

      • TheJeffness

Umm thats why you bond together with your neighbors if a collapse happens and form communities or “gangs” if you will. You wont survive if you are the only asshole on your block who fails to participate and shoots at everyone! good luck schmuck! This concept only works if you live on a farm or in a remote area. If you live in suburbia or a city you will need to form communities to survive, to bond together to collect food, medicine, etc… Most of all you need to bond together because other communities will, and some of these new communities might resort to violence to get what they need. You will need the help of your nearby community if one of these gangs comes rolling in. You need people, regardless if they have guns or not…power is in numbers, remember that.

yeah… gotta love all these prepper idiots and their come and take and ill shoot it attitude.. theyll be the first to go down..

Well, when the neighbor behaves like he’s the king of La Raza already, that’s going to be a problem. When the county won’t stop him from running his “trucking” business next to our sub-rural yard, that’s already a problem. Makes it hard to sell the house. I’ve no doubt he’ll help himself to our beans.

If it was a regular WASP, I’d feel the same threat from my neighbor. So, yeah. Neighbors are going to be a problem.

But our best neighbors are from the Philippines — they are always sharing their avocados with us. So we share our veggies, apples and citrus with them.

For your family, you need MREs and food bars to give. DO NOT give out the good stuff. Let them think that the crappy stuff is all you have. I won’t be handing out #10 cans of mountain house… And as in every family, this is the time to make your feelings know to the ones you don’t respect or care for that much. Like for me the 1/2 brother douchbag that is 27 still living at home with an in and out kid and baby momma,, and he just got his new girlfriend pregnant.

He and his kid/kids can hit the road.

I have tried to think what I will do when the time comes. I know at first people will come asking then they will come taking. There is a side of me who wants to help everyone. I believe if we alll stick together as Americans we can over come what ever might come our way. However; here in the real world True Americans are very few. To many people have become lazy and self consumed. Those people only worry about them selves and what they want. It is a disease that has been fulled by our own government and society. I have great sorrow for them. I have no idea what will be the correct actions to take at this time. I figure when the time comes I will relay on my faith and ask for guidance as I keep my family safe and feed.

Well this is to hard for even one so wise as I to figure out. I now look at my past and am grateful in the 60s everyone was mad at whites on a closed reservation, I only hung out with old people.

I do what some of them with talents and abilities to get by even if your aged. Talents and abilities, so brush up. Cooperation and knowing those that are in your circles abilities and flaws will tell you what to gently teach them or be prepared to have to let them fend there own freaking way.

I ask my Creator the most high to direct me, same as a vision quest yet you feel His vision for you and ponder it. Perhaps that is why I hoard certain over the counter meds, bandages, first aid stuff. Being a medic I know getting the squirts from foul water, food and sickness can kill you. I started doing this before being “Awake”. Then again who ever trusted the Government like your Ma?.

Grow up, when we act like scared little children we forget to use are wits. Be like the wise little kid who is calm even if you have to fake it a bit. It will calm those around you so you can all think and plan as a team, be tribal.

Be wiser than the snake. A lot of us cannot imagine stealing from anyone, plotting harm against anyone. This in itself makes us targets and victims. Sometimes you have to look around and see what evil sees so you do not fall prey to sly tricksters.

Crazy Horse said “Today is a good day to die.” He believed his Creator and honored Him, this is what made him fearless. Do the right thing. At some point I have to trust that at some moment my next step will be in darkness and I fall, or my spirit will fly.

One way to think this over is just imagine all of sudden nothing worked!!! NOTHING!!! Take it for real.

One of the ways to do it or prepare is always ask yourself, what is the FIRST thing that you are gonna need????

      WTF is TEOTWAWKI?

    • TheJeffness

If there are less drugs it will be less of a concern…not more. Alcohol withdrawls and opiate withdrawls only last a few days with post acute withdrawl maybe lasting a couple months for those addicted awhile. They are safer off the drugs than on them,,,,dont see how this is going to be a bad thing, it will be a good thing,

    • Sid

If people become desperate they will do what desperate people do. For some, the thin veneer of civilization will peal away and reveal the savagery that humans have demonstrated through history is within their capability. For others they will show what compassion they can, given the circumstances. For others, they will simply give up and die.
